Almost 100% sure this is a 762x39 wood case even though it doesn’t state full caliber based on the size and 1440, assuming that is the quantity.
Does anyone know the origins of this case?

Chinese. The "56" refers to "Type 56" which is what the Chinese call 7.62x39mm
The quantity of 1440 = two cans of 720 Only the Chinese packed 7.62x39mm in this quantity IIRC. The marking style is a little different, possibly for export. Doing some research... That's (the 1440 quantity count) is what I thought as well. I have zero history on this as it was purchased from a flea market. But the construction is decent (notched fittings not quite as fancy as dove tails), all the screws are the same, the wood is lightweight but decent quality and looks "pretty" for lack of a better word. Nice and smooth, not like most of the rough hewn stuff I'm used to. |

My cartridge researcher and collector cohorts agree that this wooden crate is a reproduction.
The quality of construction and stenciling is too good and the layout of the stenciling is not correct. |

It's always felt too "pretty" for CHICOM military production. Been looking at it in a shed at the flea market for a while now. For $5 it'll make a good add to the den until it gets replaced. |
