Chinese. The "56" refers to "Type 56" which is what the Chinese call 7.62x39mm

The quantity of 1440 = two cans of 720

Only the Chinese packed 7.62x39mm in this quantity IIRC.

The marking style is a little different, possibly for export. Doing some research...

My cartridge researcher and collector cohorts agree that this wooden crate is a reproduction.

The quality of construction and stenciling is too good and the layout of the stenciling is not correct.
