Going through uncles estate and I’m not too knowledgeable about what exactly I have here.

I would guess a 56S based on markings but the muzzle brake seems wrong. But I don’t know anything about these.  Then again I don’t think this is something he would have swapped out himself, so I’m pretty sure it’s original. I DO have the original mags, a Chinese drum mag (I used, it looks like), and the  black Bakelite Bayonet.

That's a pre-ban 56s, very nice and desirable AK. I believe they all came with slant brakes from the factory so the 74 style brake is aftermarket.

The brake is definitely aftermarket but they are surprisingly effective. Find a slant brake or muzzle nut if you want to be more ‘correct’.

What kind of value?

I’m seeing everything from $1K-$2k for Preban Chinese AKs

You'll sell it within minutes at that price. MAK-90s are selling for $1500 right now, which is Bizarro World, but the market for Chinese AKs is crazy.

Neutered Mak-90's with multiple bids are ending between $1400-$1500 right now on Gunbroker.com.  Your example of a pre-ban will fetch $2000+ easily.

Yep -  a few companies made those 74 brake copies back in the day and it was an easy swap.

Push in the plunger, hold down while unscrewing in the wrong direction.

I have a few but decided that I liked the slant break better so I swapped them back out and they went in the parts bin.

Those chinese 56s to bring good money these days, especially in a state where they have grandfathering so "pre-94" actually means something.

Very solid rifles, just a little funky with spares and furniture as there are a number of things that are spec'd differently than the euro stuff which has come in since clinton stopped all the chinese imports.

I always meant to pick up another fixed or underfolder type 56 but then I got interested in other stuff and kinda moved on.  They were still relatively affordable for what they are until last year.  Now everything is crazy.
