That thing started life in an original Russian AK factory.

At some point before it was imported, it was “Saiga” configuration - meaning it didn’t have a pistol grip like it does now.

That configuration allowed its import into the US as a sporting firearm instead of an 1989-banned “assault weapon.”

Luckily someone (Arsenal) came along and restored it to its intended configuration.

How do you remove the front sight block? I want to mount a deadair keymo brake and they don't make one in 24mm thread. I would have to convert this to 14mm threads.

By the looks of this the front sight block is a sleeve over the barrel. My guess if I would have to remove it, have the barrel threaded and have a few front sight installed.

If there a good ak smith to do this?

There should be two pins mounted horizontally near the bottom of the FSB that need to come out. Then it usually needs to be pressed off. Some people have had good luck with garage presses or even a setup using a mallet. Any AK specific smith should be able to easily do it.

I'd think any AKM style would work but don't quote me on that. The thing to look for is to make sure the ID of the new FSB will match up to the OD of your barrel at that spot. It's been years since I've even thought about it so I honestly don't remember which ones will work.
