Looking for some opinions on everyone's favorite .223 ammo to run through an AK.

I have my M855 stocked away in AR mags and now I need to fill up my AK mags.
I'll be running this stuff out of a SLR 106 w/ 12.3" barrel.

I typically run Golden Tiger out of my 47 if I can but it seems like that's tough to find in .223. Any other lacquered ammo in stock out there?

Golden Tiger, Red Army Standard, made by Vympel.

Brown Bear, Monarch, made by Barnaul.

Those are my favorite steel case cheap ammo.

Wolf MC (Barnaul) as it runs well in all platforms.

I prefer wolf in lacquer then poly.  I've used the various bears but wasn't worth the extra price for what I use it for.  In a pinch I'll shoot Tula.  No issues with it but it seems to be the poorest quality of the steel case 223.

Wolf Military Classic and lacquer-coated Monarch.

Glad you reminded me of Monarch. Used to shoot that all the time when I was in a state that had Academy.

Black box Wolf and Tula have always worked fine in my AR and AK

Tula seems weak to me. It's the only ammo that wouldn't reliably cycle my stg556.

The golden tiger burns dirty imo but is reliable in our AR's.

We prefer polymer coated wolf.

Tula 75gr.  My 1/9 twist Saiga really likes it and it works OK in my 1/7 twist ARs too.

This, with Golden Tiger as a second choice.

Silver bear is the best in regards to withstanding humid conditions.
Poly was the worst in my redneck test

Brown bear for me but I usually shoot it through an AR instead of an AK.

Yep, brown or silver bear for me.

Some of the older Wolf Polyformance ammo was boxer primed and the cases could be reloaded like brass.  I have done it a few times, mostly for oddball loadings I needed to look different.

I remember every paycheck I used to go up to Walmart and buy a pack of Wolf steel case 55gr for $5 a box. Stacked it deep.

Barnaul, lacquered or zinc-coated. Don't care who the importer is. Those guys make a good 223 round.

The only thing to recommend for Tula is the non-magnetic stuff, and only the 62gr variety. 55gr has an awful pressure curve that does not seem to cycle middie or rifle-length gas very well. Otherwise, Tula 223 is almost uniformly trash ammo.

The stuff I kinda wanted to try was Vympel, because they load up their .223 nice and hot. Alas, that's probably gonna be a couple years off.

The boxer primed Wolf steel cased also makes for good winter reloads  when there is snow on the ground and brass would get lost. I've loaded a lot of it before along with the steel, boxer primed .45acp.
As cheap as both used to be, if I got one reload I was happy and didn't lose any good brass.
