Go easy on me, it's my first conversion.
My Dad's Norinco MAK-90 (pre-ban, I bought it for him in the early 90s) BEFORE. http://www.blackmorningstar.com/misc/ak/AK-Dad-Old.jpg And AFTER....finished earlier toady, with Ironwood Designs furniture, and Tapco G2 trigger. http://www.blackmorningstar.com/misc/ak/AK-Dad.jpg |

No4MK1, that NHM 91 looks nice, I just found one at the pawn shop last week, I put it on layaway as soon as I saw that it was a Norinco, I can't wait to pick it up. When you removed the thumb hole stock, was the mounting hardware there for the pistol grip or did you have to get that also?
|
|
|
Thanks gtate,
The Timbersmith set included the mounting hardware. If I were to have gone the ironwood route, I would have needed to buy the hardware as I believe the bolt for the thumbhole pistol grip is different than a stock pistol grip bolt. Cheers, Chris |

Hiding under this mess is a pre-'89 Polytech Legend that a "tactifool" decided to make "tacticool". This is what it looked like when I got it:
http://home.comcast.net/~msu89dawgs/legend.jpg None of the original parts came with it, and the lower stock tang was removed. I have taken the aftermarket stuff off, and am in the process of restoring it to a correct appearance (albeit not with all Chinese parts and furntiure). |

You don't need to worry about parts count, so if I were you I'd go out of my way to replace everything with Chinese parts. may take a little while. You can get a new stock tang welded on for relatively cheap. |

You can get a new stock tang welded on for relatively cheap. I got the rifle cheaper for a good price, since it wasn't apparent it was a pre-'89 Legend. I installed a new lower tang with rivets (luckily, the lower tang was held in with two rivets, as with an original 47, although not in the same manner as a Soviet Type 3. I bought non-Chinese parts to keep total cost down, but may replace with Chinese as I find them for good deals. I'll post an "after" pic once I get the Bulgarian milled wood set I bought re-finished. Needless to say, even now, it looks much, MUCH, better than in the photo. |
|
|
That's good to know, I'll be sure to pick up the mounting hardware. I'm thinking about trying to find an RPK stock for it, if I can't find one I'll check out Timbersmith, it looks pretty good.

My three Mak's. All milled, All original, except for a little work on the thumbhole stock. Makes the fit a little better. |

I believe it is called phenolic, very close in color to bakelite but a little more uniform.

That's awesome, I always wanted one of the milled Polytechs, you're doing a good thing bringing that rifle back to it's original beauty.

Hello, all. Here's my MAK 90, I bought it new, in the early 1990s
The Rifle has an East German made Ak74 "Zig-Zag" - Type Muzzle Brake, and a WWII German MG42 Machinegun Pistol-Grip, which I modified to fit the MAK's receiver & trigger guard. http://i43.photobucket.com/albums/e383/blndyhb/IMG_1791.jpg Furniture: Original Birchwood up front; and NOS Chinese wooden Butt-stock. All wood was sanded bare, then refinished with 1 coat of Minwax pre-stain wood conditioner prep, followed by 3 coats of Minwax Satin Pecan Satin Pecan sample from Minwax website: http://www.minwax.com/images/stains-color-guide/thumbs/polyshades/mps_pecan320_420-color-stain.jpg The actual wood color on my MAK 90 is closer to the MinWax sample above than what it looks like in the pic. - |

That right there makes me want another AK. Looks great!! |

Alcohol doesn't solve any problems..... But then again, neither does milk.

I like that MG42 grip, gives it a unique look, nice looking rifle.

Thank you, gtate.
Below, same rifle in slightly different garb: MAK 90 with original Thumbhole stock modified to approximate a MG42 buttstock, whittled while waiting for the OEM ChiCom buttstock to arrive.. http://i43.photobucket.com/albums/e383/blndyhb/Cars/008-2.jpg And a gratuitous shot of my newest toy, a Savage 10PC (.308) fitted with 4-16X-50mm glass http://i43.photobucket.com/albums/e383/blndyhb/IMG_1578.jpg |

Nice collection of Chicoms! I went the RPK clone route with my NHM 91, but after seeing yours I think I might try that, how hard was it to get the bipod collar off?

Thank you sir, I wish I could afford to still have them all. I removed the bipod retainer with a hacksaw otherwise I would have had to remove the front sight I sawed within a 1/16 of the barrel and stuck a flat head screwdriver in the cut and it popped right off.

The fist MAK on the left with the checkered grip is a Polytech. The polytech MAK's are easy to spot as they have the longer band around the barrel where the spike bayonet base is attached.
