My wife and I are planning to vacation in Wichita this summer for a week or so.  What's to do there?

Probably the same thing you do in Ohio, just without the 12 hour drive.

You are talking about Wichita, Kansas, right?    I mean, it ain't Branson or Nashville, LOL.

Seriously, not really sure what there is to do.  Not much for shopping, though there is a mall.  Dog N Shake for a toasted burger, but not everyone loves them like I do.  I suppose you could Dine and dash at the Denny's on the west side of town, but the run across Kellogg to the motel might be dicey depending on the time of night.

Get mugged?  Oh, wait you said Wichita not Topeka.
Wichita has all kinds of cool stuff... just look it up online.
The Cosmosphere in Hutchinson has an SR71 Blackbird and some Moon landing stuff too.

For the record, I did pay for my meal at Denny's that one particular night.  So, technically, I didn't dine and dash.  But the guy that passed me in the middle of Kellogg at a full sprint, well.....

But if you're going to visit Wichita and not actually spend any time in Wichita, then yeah, I second the Cosmosphere in Hutchinson.  Also the salt mine in Hutchinson.  Carriage Crossing Restaurant & Bakery in Yoder, KS is an Amish run place that won't disappoint.  I would plan at least half a day, if not most of the day for the Cosmosphere.  Haven't had a chance to check out the Salt mine yet.  Get your tickets early!

There's Gander Mountain, Cabela's, and an assortment of smaller sporting goods stores.  I also enjoy the Old Town area for meals and artistic shopping.  Gambling just a few minutes south of Wichita.
There are lots of things to do - depends on what you are interested in doing.

Short drive over to Hutchinson and you can tour the salt mine and also see the Kansas Space Cosmosphere.

Just curious, but why Wichita? We aren't exactly the tourist mecca here.

There's an okay Museum down in old town if that's your thing.

If you like movies, you absolutely need to check out one of the Warren Theaters in town. The west side Warren has a 3D I-max theater that is pretty awesome. The Warren Theaters in general are touted as some of the best in the country.

There's a pretty nice water park south of Wichita in Derby. Again, if that's your thing.

Any idea what other kinds of activities you'd care to do?

Good one.  Well, maybe that's a little harsh......but only just a little.  There's this place in Wichita:

Kansas Aviation Museum

If you're lucky, the Orpheum Theater [nicely restored] or The Cotillion Ballroom may have musical entertainment.  The Orpheum is also known to have a summer film series.

I regularly patronize and recommend the following eat places in Hutchinson:
Airport Steakhouse at the airport for, oddly enough, steak.  Aviation decor.
Anchor Dining Room at corner of Avenue B and South Main for Mexican.  They have a buffet at which old people and small children have been known to get trampled.
Carl's Bar in 100 block of North Main for good food and excellent selection of beers.
Oliver's in unit block of East 2nd just off Main, again with the good food an excellent selection of beers.  Hate to have to choose between Carl's and Oliver's.
Sacks 5th Avenue for good old A-mur-kin cheeseburgers, corner of West 5th and Monroe, about 4 blocks west of Main.  Automotive and classic rock/blues decor in an old gas station.

Avoid the truck stop in South Hutchinson at all costs.  Their gas is always higher and their food will always give you gas. However there is Shooters Supply in South Hutch for a decent selection of gun pron to look at.

And finally, in addition to the previously mentioned Carriage Crossing [beware their gynormous cinnamon rolls] there's also Bullseye Cafe in Yoder for good burgers.

Anchor Inn has gone severely downhill in quality the last year or two.

Come to Wichita, KS, for summer vacation? Really?
Some of us that live here would like to vacation in Ohio at Camp Perry for the National Rifle Matches. Got a house we can rent?

If you like Mediterranean food, be sure to check out the many Lebanese restaurants, but do not miss "Bella Luna", with 3 locations in Wichita.

I stayed in a hotel in Old Town, down the block was a bar with band outside on the patio.  It was the most exciting thing I have seen in Kansas let alone Wichita, and I have  been here 20 years.

There are two large malls, Towne East and Towne West

I've heard of but not seen http://www.wichitawaterwalk.com/waterwalk-place-play.html

Also based on your avatar, there are Jezebels, Pleasures and Michelles Beach House.

I go to Wichita for major medical stuff and to shop at Sams Club.  If I want something fun to do, I drive to Colorado, Kansas City or Oklahoma City  to do it.

Wichita and vacation do not compute.

wait, vacation to Wichita? uh what? if you want to come to Kansas I'd stop at kansas city...
Movies and bowling are the go to. Wichita Thunder games are fun and cheap. That's about
it apart from going out into the country shooting, riding atv's and dirt bikes and what not.
