Here's a simple and cheap truck vault for your carbine.  Model is a Colt 6920 w / 14.7 and permed A2 flashhider, 30rd mag inserted. There's a little more room so a 16" barreled AR should fit.

Surplus, flare / ammo can from Forest Park Army Navy, $15
Wire rope clamps, Ace Hardware, $2.99 ea. locking nuts, .23 ea, washers, .12 ea.

Tools used, Drill, hand grinder, reciprocating saw w/metal cutting blades.

Drill holes for u-bolts.

Screw on nuts to form a hilt, insert into holes, then add locking nuts on the U-bolt  inside the can, bolt down

Cut off remaining portion of u-bolt at the locking nut

Grind the U-bolt down to the locking nut, clean up with hand file if necessary

Close, insert lock

Rifle inside an Eagle Industries Carbine case

Run a heavy duty bike cable around your seat support / base (better) or through a jate ring in your SUV's cargo area

Caution; secure your emergency tools so a thief wont use them to free your DIY el cheapo gun vault.

Total time approx 1 hour.  I spent more times dragging the tools from the shed.

I plan to paint it to match the color of the interior, and cut up an old Army issue foam sleeping mat and glue it to the interior of the can so that I wont need the rifle case and can either insert another rifle using a foam divider.

IKH,

thanks, I was wondering if anybody would recognize the Disco II interior. I drove it past your shop this past sunday going to and from the Nat Forest / Suches.   OME lift springs, shocks, 265 / 75 R16 aggressive AT's and ARB bull bumper coming this June.

Maybe build a wood thing to go around it and put carpet to match, that way people cant look in and see something deadbolted to the floor....that would scream "steal this car" in downtown ATL

definitly not worse than my 1 ton wrangler.  at highway speeds I get around 4 mpg.   and close to 3k

If I had a vehicle like that, I would do the false floor thing. Hidden is better than locked 99.9% of the time. Cool idea though.

Awesome idea for a relatively secure case, I am now looking for the pieces to make it happen.
gajeep94yj, Didn't know you had your YJ set up that way, I just got mine and really like it so far.

Unless you are talking about using a natural void, this is a bad idea. Look up Georgia laws concerning hidden compartments.

How is this any different than using something like the Honda Ridgeline's trunk in bed compartment?

I like the idea of a storage box for the pig stick, better than having it bang around under my seat. MIght think of something like this in my bed. Tagged

Shit....

GA Code 16-11-112 section C

(c)(1) It is unlawful for any person to knowingly own or operate any vehicle containing a false or secret compartment.
   (2) It is unlawful for any person to knowingly install, create, build, or fabricate in any vehicle a false or secret compartment.
   (3) It is unlawful for any person to knowingly sell, trade, or otherwise dispose of a vehicle which is in violation of this Code section.

They take all the fun out of life. :-(

4 MPG?
Do you mean 3k as RPM?
Are you calling Highway Speeds around 55 or 65 or ...??

Yes on both accounts. I have 38" tires on steel beadlocks with 35 spline 1ton chromoly axles being spn by 5.13:1 gears!

It's not really a highway vehicle!

teq, you need to move that thing so I can look at that beutiful green 04 Disco II! Nice jeep though, set up right.  I blame all you giant tire jeepsters for all the super deep ruts I always have to winch through.

yeah, I may do the eleveated floor in the future where its obvious once you open the rear door.  Ive only had this project truck for a minute.

You should be okay with boxes, custom compartments, etc. that are in plain view/visible in regards to the new law.  You start installing remote switches to the void behind your glove box then you might be in trouble.

Personally, I think the hidden compartment law will be treated like our switch blade law; seldom, if ever enforced.

We need rover pics plus pictures of the final mounting location and a final on the install.

Marv, great idea and it beats the hell out of running the bike cable through the rifle.

AB, brother you have it all wrong:
16-11-112.
(a) As used in this Code section, the term:
(1)(A) 'False or secret compartment' means any enclosure which is integrated into or attached to a vehicle and the purpose of the compartment is to conceal, hide, or prevent discovery by law enforcement officers of:
(i) A person concealed for an unlawful purpose;
(ii) Controlled substances possessed in violation of Article 2 of Chapter 13 of this title; or
(iii) Other contraband.
(B) Examples of 'false or secret compartment' may include, but are not limited to:
(i) False, altered, or modified fuel tanks;
(ii) Original factory equipment on a vehicle that has been modified; or
(iii) Any compartment, space, or box that is added or attached to existing compartments, spaces, or boxes of the vehicle.
(2) 'Vehicle' includes, but is not limited to, cars, trucks, buses, motorcycles, bicycles, aircraft, helicopters, boats, ships, yachts, and other vessels.
(b) It may be inferred that the accused intended to use a false or secret compartment if a person knowingly has a false or secret compartment which:
(1) Is concealing a person for an unlawful purpose;
(2) Is concealing a controlled substance in violation of Article 2 of Chapter 13 of this title;
(3) Is concealing other contraband;
(4) Shows evidence of the previous concealment of a person for an unlawful purpose;
(5) Shows evidence of the previous concealment of controlled substances in violation of Article 2 of Chapter 13 of this title; or
(6) Shows evidence of the previous concealment of other contraband.
(d) Any person who violates this Code section shall, upon conviction thereof, be punished by imprisonment for not less than one nor more than two years, by a fine not to exceed $10,000.00, or both.
(e) Upon the arrest of a person who owns or is operating a vehicle which is in violation of this Code section, if the vehicle is not otherwise subject to forfeiture under other provisions of law, or not determined to be needed to be held as evidence, the law enforcement officer shall seize the license plate and registration for such vehicle and shall issue a citation for violation of this Code section and a temporary license plate for the vehicle. The temporary license plate shall be on a form as prescribed by the state revenue commissioner. The temporary license plate shall be valid for 30 days or until the owner of the vehicle provides verification that such vehicle has been repaired so as to eliminate any violation of this Code section, whichever occurs first. Such vehicle shall be subject to inspection by law enforcement and if it is determined that such vehicle has been repaired, the license plate and registration shall be returned to the owner at such time.

Simply disclosing to an officer if you are stopped, means you had no intent to conceal from law enforcement, therefore you are not in violation. Secondly, this law does not spell out firearm, only controlled substance, people, and contraband. Since a firearm is not one of these you are clear again. Lastly, Code 16-11-126 allows for carrying in any place in your vehicle, so once again 16-11-112 does not apply.

Besides Marv gets the LE/ MIL exemption.

You may run into a LEO who is not sure on the law and may try to charge you but it will never stick as long as you disclose prior to discovery. There would be no intent.

Dont sell it short, I have seen many an experienced driver/operator "WOW" the participants in a stocker, some make it look deceptively easy when the perfect line is chosen and the appropriate pedal is used.

The Rover especially, those rigs have hauled and returned more people and supplies from the worlds most dangerous and inhospitable places on earth.

If the above sentence isn't enough of a testament then I don't know what is.

Looking forward to Rover Pics, stock / modified or on the edge of insanity.

Teq,

Ive definitely noticed a big difference from my lifted Explorer given the live axle in this thing.  And your right on with in regards to the right approach and right amount of pedal.  I another poster here could add his .02 here, right Jeff? Bronco II? Flat Rock Gap?

Actually, I became fascinated with these after passing two lifted / modified Rovers at the 400 / 53 intersection in front of Derek's shop years ago.  Ive read up /researched them for a couple of years, but was still a little apprehensive getting into these and not something more common parts wise.

The lift springs shipped yesterday, but honest, Im not sure this project will ever get off the ground.  Every time I turn around, my wife is in it and gone.

"My truck's low on gas, Im taking your truck"
"Im blocked in, Im taking your truck"
"Instead of moving the car seats, I'll just take your truck"
"There's a spider in the crawl space, I'm just going to take your truck to Target this morning"
"The Gulf Oil spill has me concerned with the economical impact on Gulf Tourism, therefore Im taking your truck to Kroger go get milk"

She says if I put lift spacers and up size the tires on her Expedition, she might give it back.
