I recently came into some unexpected expendable cash. I hadn't been to a gun show for a few months so, I drove for 2 1/2 hours and went to the DACA gun show in Dallas yesterday. I spent most of the day there, and saw a lot of cool stuff, but nothing really caught my attention. Just before 5:00 I was getting ready to leave and saw a gentleman walking around with an Ithaca Model 37. It was in pretty rough shape, had a Choate pistol grip installed, and I probably paid to much for it but I had to have it.

I would really like to put a wooden stock on it. I spent most of last night messing around on the internet but didn't have any luck (maybe my search foo is weak). I'm not looking for anything fancy as the shotgun will likely end up behind the seat of my truck. I sent an email to the new Ithaca gun company but don't expect to hear from them for a couple of days. Being the impatient type I thought I'd check here. So, anyone have an idea where I might find a stock?

There is a fair amount of rust on the right side. I would like to get this cleaned up and get it refinished. I was thinking maybe parkerized. Any suggestions? Also, besides the serial number, there are no markings on the receiver. Is this normal? Thanks for any input, Ham

WOW! Blued without the game scene roll mark. I've not seen that before.

I too have been on the hunt for an old Ithaca Model 37 DSPS and just found mine on Gunbroker for $249. Like you, I need to find a nice ole walnut stock and fore end for it.

Seems like finding these shotguns without that roll mark is getting tougher all the time; that was the big sticking point for me.

With the rust a refinish/parkerize might be in order, I guess it would depend on how bad that rust is.

ETA: Curious, what did you paid for your 37?

Walnut Model 37 stocks are tough.

I've been looking for a few months for an uncheckered stock for this:

Don't forget to check eBay. Most gun parts are banned but stocks are still OK.

Thanks guys. ch139 I paid $250 out the door for it. Maybe a little on the high side considering the rust but I really wanted a M37. Going to take a look at the refinishing section here and see what I can do. I think it would look great with a parkerized finish and plain walnut stock. ServiceGun if you ever find that uncheckered stock and just happen to have a spare stock laying around, well just keep me in mind.

I have a few Ithacas 37 but no extra parts!
Have you looked at CHOATE
If you have to have wood. Try Ithaca Gun Company
I do not know, if they have stocks that fit the older models.
If they do, you will be paying for it, 10 fold.
If nothing else, they can tell you when your shotgun was made.
Hope this helped.

PS To ServiceGun: Where did you get your Ithaca?
Looks a little like the one on the right.

ServiceGun, I have the same Ithaca DSPS with the checkered stock. From what I understand, Ithaca offered the DSPS with and without the checkering. Personally, I like the checkering. But I can't blame you for wanting to switch it.

The new Ithaca will sell you new wood. It's supposed to fit all Model 37's.

An uncheckered set like they put on their defense models runs around $100.

I got this Ithaca around 5 months ago off Gunbroker.

It came from a guy in Florida who takes guns in trade for custom fabricated safes.

I like the parked gun you have.

Truthfully I was looking for a no-frille gun and would have preferred one with bead sights and uncheckered wood.

As long as we're showing pics, here's my Model 37 in electroless nickel and Choate stock:

Have a 24" bbl Mod 37 DSPS too

Been looking for 1 1/4" sling swivels for it: asked on the Gun Parts Corp forum - only for their "expert" to ask if the gun was fitted with sling studs, in which case try the Uncle Mike's swivels!!!
Must have gotten rid of the folk in the know there.....

If anyone knows where I can find the swivels I'd appreciate being pointed in the right direction as I want to trick my 37 out with a M1907 sling.

I remember you asking about these in the past.
I checked with the current owners of Ithaca and they have none of these as NOS stock.

I recently bought a 37 that had a broken stock from a local pawn shop for $150.  The front sight was also gone.  I cut the barrel down to 18.75, and installed the latest Choate plastic stock after fruitlessly looking for a wood one on the net.  I already had a Choate plastic corn cob forend from an Ithaca long since traded, so I ended up with new plastic front and rear.  I was at first kinda wanting wood, but once the Choate was installed, I've changed my mind.  The current Choate fits me perfectly and comes with adjusting spacers as well.  The gun now feels like it was made just for me.  I took it to the range last weekend, without a front sight still, and it patterned great.  Even without using a sight, it shot exactly where I was (hopefully) aiming.  I can't wait to try slugs once I get the front sight on.  The barrel chopping didn't seem to effect accuracy at all.

For the front sight, I bought a tritium Meprolight from Midway, which has since arrived and looks like the ticket for this gun.  Now, to just find some time to install it.
