How often and how do I clean the gas tube on a Colt m4? Will the hand guards break?

never and no

There's not much you can clean that the burning hot high pressure gas doesn't already take care of.

So you guys never clean the gas system? Is this different than other rifles?

I just spray some CLP foaming bore cleaner down the tube from the upper end till it comes out the end of the barrel.  Been doing this for about 3k rounds and no probs.

No need to clean the gas tube, but if you must, spray some powder blast or brake cleaner in from the receiver end, followed by compressed air.  Do not stick anything inside the gas tube like pipe cleaners.

What does this have to do with the handguards???

No, that 20-30,000PSI gas blasting through there pretty much takes care of everything.

The handguards will break, if you hit them with a sledgehammer, or drive over them with a tank.  New ones anyway, the original A1 style were known for cracking but they were made of different kinds of material than more modern ones.

The gas tube is just about the only part of an AR that does NOT need to be cleaned.

Funny, I rarely clean any part of any of mine and they all seem to run like champs.

Lube, shoot, repeat.

Don't worry about your gas tube, but do clean the bolt carrier (gas) key somewhere around a thousand rounds.  Keep the BCG and barrel extension clean when they need it, that is to say when the carbon builds up and threatens safe operation.

In 43 years of experience with the DGI system I've only seen one tube rupture, and that was due to a defect.

If your gas tube really needs to be cleaned, then either the gun is just about shot-out (200K+ rounds) or you need to use cleaner ammunition.

Never clean mine, also never read that it needed to be cleaned.

NOT a good idea to spray any solvents or petroleum based products into your gas tube. If you have, use a little brake cleaner or degreaser, and an air hose to remove. Solvents in the gas tube attract debris which can result in stoppage.

Make sure you use a bunch of Q-Tips so you can get as many fibres as possible stuck in there. Same goes for cleaning the bolt.

Same here.  When are the white glove clean myths gonna go away?

As has been stated previously, there is no need to clean the gas tube.

As far as breaking the hand guards, since they are made, they can be broken.   I'm curious as to what led you to that particular question.

So I wanted to interject here, I have been running a bushmaster m-4 upper as a dedicated 22 lr, and I have been um, lackidasical about cleaning. When I switch the kit out and run the normal bolt, I get NO gas and have to manually eject the round. How would I clean out the gas tube in this case?

If you've so much .22 debris that you're not getting any gas at all, then Super Tech Carburettor Cleaner available at Wally World, would be a good start.

Usually after running a .22LR kit you should send a few rounds of 5.56 down the pipe at the end of the day to blow all the debris out.

What’s with this obsession of cleaning the gas tube? Just leave it alone. You will most likely do more damage trying to clean it than if you just forget about it and shoot!

Word. 30,000 PSI in the gas tube cleans itself. Some people are getting anal when it comes to cleaning.
