Went to GT Distributors today and all they had on the shelf was the 5.56 55 gr. Gold Dot.  I asked the guy at the counter if he was expecting the 64 gr Gold Dot and he said that all 5.56 Gold Dot ammo had been discontinued, and they were only loading .223 spec Gold Dot from here on out.  I bought what they had left of the 55 gr but am somewhat disappointed that my choice duty ammo isnt going to be carried anymore, does anyone else have some info as to the decision to drop the 5.56?

"The 5.56 loading was discontinued by Speer because it was causing kabooms and popped primers, due to
many agencies using this ammo in rifles with 223 chambers nstead of true 5.56 NATO chambers.
There is nothing wrong with the ammo but using it in 223 chambered guns is the problem."

all the info I could find on it. i'd assume they just expect the 5.56 guys to shoot .223 instead now.  ;/

What's the FPS difference of the 2?  I really wouldn't worry that much about it.  I'm sure the .223 will kill jst as good.  L2B

People reported better accuracy with the .223
Also Gold Dots expand down to a low velocity, so no biggie really.

62gr Fusions and 64gr Gold dots are what im stocking up on when i can find them on sale.
I also have a few boxes of the 5.56 55gr, never got to try any of the 5.56 64gr unfortunately.

Id like to see the velocity of the .223 out of a 10.5" barrel at 200m and the amount of expansion; if it still performs like the 5.56 version then it may be worthwhile to start buying it instead of switching to Winchester or Federal LE loads.

I may be thinking of the 50gr TSX, but I think its the Gold Dot.

I read that it was constructed to be able to expand reliably from a 10" barrel at 200 yards.
That performance was requested by a Gov. Agency (ICE I think)

That was the 5.56 64 gr Gold Dot; either for ICE or CBP.
