Nothing for the Barnes 300gr TTSX in .458 Socom?

An interesting find that surfaces in this study are the results of the auto glass.  Everyone has always assumed that TSX's close up and punch caliber size holes when shot through auto glass.  That is obviously not the case at all.  Really good all around performance!

Thanks for the excellent information, it was so good I immediately ordered another 250 Barnes 70 grain TSX's from Powder Valley for hog hunting and self defense....

A couple of spec ops groups that don't exist love them out of their sniper rifles.

You'll never look back!  I love them out of my 16" gun for big game.  Killed a huge nilgai bull last Spring with them and saw a giraffe, a cape buffalo and 5 zebra killed with them by a friends wife last summer in RSA.  All 1 shot kills.

The info is marked as the 65 Grendel has a 120 TTSX going 2726 FPS at impact... is that do able with a Grendel? I can find info saying the 100 grain TTSX can be pushed to that velocity but not the 120.

I do not think so, at least not in an AR. Maybe with a 24" barrel @ 55,000 to 60,000 psi you could.

Bill A. keeps his factory ammo @ 50,000psi and his load data @ 48,000 to 50,000 psi.

The factory 120TSX ammo is rated right at 2,400 fps.

With my loads, I get ~ 2,600 fps in my 18" Grendel, using a 100gr bullet.  I get ~2,380-2,400 fps with a 120/123gr bullet.

I was surprised that the "RRLP" bullets penetrated as much as they did, I never would have thought that a frangible bullet could succeed in reaching the 12" minimum, nor would I have thought they would do so well going through the various barriers, which I thought was what the RRLP bullets were specifically intended NOT to do.

When looking at test data is as predictable at that was, they have done an amazing job with their product. What a great company with a great product. Every time I see stuff like this, I gain new respect for them (Barnes). I am not a fan and mostly load hornady because they are way cheaper.

I added these to the "Best choices for self defense ammo" FAQ. Unfortunately, most of these are about 10MB each, so a speedy connection helps.

Good stuff. Thanks for posting.

Question: The files shown in your post as 6.5 Grendel –– was it confirmed that they are in fact for that cartridge? I ask because the listed velocities seem too high (as a couple other members noted), and the pages of the two PDFs show only "6.5mm", not 6.5 Grendel. Perhaps they are for 6.5 Swede or some other 6.5 round?

Did Josh every say what barrel length was used for the 5.56mm Gel test

Nope - no idea...

I'm guessing they used varying lengths of barrels or loaded the ammo to achieve a specific velocity.  I say this because the 55gr .224 bullet was only going 2561fps while the 62gr was going 2667fps.  Neither was loaded hot but the 55gr certainly should be moving faster.  I suspect it was to prevent the issues I had when testing them on water jugs.  The 55gr bullet didn't handle the high speeds very well and the petals would tear off.  If you recall I was getting over 3000fps from a 16" barrel with the 55gr TSX and Barnes' 5.56 pressure data using TAC.  I think for the 55gr to be useful I'm going to have to back the loads down to 2800fps or less, and I can get that from a 62gr bullet.

I would love to see this gel testing with the 50gr TSX.  The 50gr handloads I used were over 3000fps impact but they held together extremely well.
