So we know the 602 had engraved sight wheel markings.

We've also seen examples of H&R uppers with engraved sight marks like these.  It's assumed that the raised marks didn't come out that clear so they were just ground/sanded flush and stamped/engraved.

No one has seen Colt do that.  Until now....

Anyone else seen a Colt upper w/ stamped/engraved markings?

I haven't seen that.  Could you post more pictures of the entire upper?  I've never seen an arrow that shape before.  I'm curious about: auto sear relief, front and rear edge of carry handle, shape of gas tube hole, confirm front lug is not rebated, forging contours.

Never seen one but doesn't surprise me as Colt never wasted anything!

Could you post a super close-up of the R?  I know at some point in the past there was a thread where we compared 602 the "R" to the "R" on the non-Colt 603 upper receiver and they were different.  (I'll try to find those pictures)  If the 602 "R" is the same as your CH 603 "R" maybe they drug the tooling out of retirement to fix that upper receiver.

I found this one recently, I'll try to figure out if it came in one of the recently imported parts kits and if it had a serial number tag with it.  Like boywonder777's it has all the features of a regular "CH" upper except the "R" is engraved.  I don't see any tool marks in the area, it doesn't look like a deformed "R" was removed.

Looks like they just forgot the R in the forging. . . ?

If there's one like that there must be more.

Really strange.  That's gonna drive some people nuts.

i think the theory is that the R didn't come out clear enough so they ground it smooth and stamped it.  kind of like the nds 601 blems where the + didn't come out sharp enough.

Right, except the above photo doesn't appear to show any tool marks to indicate that the raised R was removed.  I'm saying that it looks like it was never in the forging to begin with.
It's possible the person grinding down the raised R did a splendid job, and left no marks behind, but precedent with the US Government would make that pretty unlikely.

This.  Basically a combat rifle blemish made USGI functional at factory.  Waste not want not and if they didn't proof they were immediately destroyed.  I've always wondered how many in a batch or run weren't up to milspec and destroyed.  With what we are seeing today simply because our attention to detail far exceeds the milspec for rifle function and coating it appears not many were actually trashed unless they blew up on proof test or failed MP test which doesn't pertain to the aluminum pieces.

Could it be that that particular mold had the R smoothed and removed rather than the forgings?  I know for a fact some of us have GM uppers that exhibit the same forging flaws while I'm pretty sure there are some that don't.

I'm guessing that someone did a good job at grinding/polishing off the "R".  I would think if there were a forging die somewhere without the "R" that there would be many examples of stamped "R"s. Personally, I don't think it would be hard at all to polish off a bad R and stamp it to where it would look like this example.

As far as the number of parts that didn't pass inspection or were not mil-spec.......I'd have to look for it again, but when I was looking for 607 info I came across documentation about th edevelopement of the M16 through the years and the number of variances and exceptions that Colt put in for and received from the govt were numerous.
