We're seeing a huge wave in the AR10 marketplace this year, and lightweight, well balanced 16-18" guns seems to be the name of the game.  SHOT is going to be interesting for sure.

http://www.thefirearmblog.com/blog/2014/11/07/colt-marc-901-rifle-family/#

Look at the MSRP's on these bad boys.

"Colt’s Manufacturing Company, one of the world’s leading designers, developers and manufacturers of firearms, has evolved its highly popular LE901®-16S modular carbine design by introducing the new M.A.R.C. 901™ (modular AR carbine) product family. This family of modular and customizable carbines features four new models:

LE901®-16SE

LE901®FDE-16SE

LE901®-18SE

AR901™-16S

“The original model LE901 is very popular with our customers, so we are happy to continue its development and introduce new additions to the family,” said Joyce Rubino, Vice President of Marketing for Colt’s Manufacturing Company. “The new M.A.R.C. 901 models allow our customers to more easily move between various caliber and accessory configurations for target shooting, hunting or tactical purposes.”

The fifth model in the M.A.R.C. 901 family, the AR901-16S, is the perfect balance between LE901 quality and affordability. It features a free-floated barrel and user-configurable tubular handguard with rail mounting provisions beyond the standard 3, 6, 9 and 12 o’clock positions to include rail mounting positions on 16 different planes. The AR901-16S has a B5 Bravo buttstock and measures 34.24-inches with the stock retracted, or 37.5-inches with the stock extended. It has a 1/12 RH twist, weighs 8.24 pounds, and has an MSRP of $1,623.

I think the 7.62x39 conversion  will make the 901 very desirable. Glad to see the price is dropping.

Does anyone remember what I said within the last two weeks about Colt being uniquely positioned to compete with the GII with the 901?

I had no clue about this MARC 901 series at the time, and it shows that Colt has really been watching the demand trend, and quickly responded to it.

* Quad Rials - market not really interested anymore

* Lightweight - yes, more of it please

* Well balanced - yes, yes (short BCG does that)

This one is going to sell well at that price point.

Not too shabby

I do not have an AR10 pattern rifle yet.  I like what I see with the Gen II and Nexgen. Will probably pick up one of those next year as more options become available.

Although the Scar 17S is really calling my name

Looks like I might need to add the FDE one to my safe.

op,
does the 901 bolt look more like a normal ar10 bolt or the dpms g2 type?  I mean, it is all fat up front w/ larger OD bolt face and what not?

also, you say the 901 would balnce better b/t the receivers are shorter, but isn't hte extra lenght on armalite and sr25 pattern receivers (to be general) more at th eback of hte receivers behind where the pistol grip is?

LRRPF52 predicted this one, right on the money.... and it made sense.

It takes those kinds of resources combined with clear thinking to move in the right directions.

Sometimes, bigger companies have systems that strive to maintain the status quo and those systems may tend to attack innovations that are a threat to the current revenue streams. Seeing this gives some hope for Colt as a survivor.

Colt 901 bolt and disassembled BCG:

Yes, the SR-25 BCG that everyone has been copying since 1996 is much longer than the original Stoner AR10 from the 1950's.  It brought with it a 9" receiver set, with the additional length added to the rear of the receivers.

Where this affects the balance equation is that it places the receiver more forward with the same stock length.  I wish I had all the major rifles in hand to show you what I mean.  Maybe someone with some photoshop skills could scale an original AR10, an SR-25, a GII, and the Colt 901.

That is what has always bothered me about the bigger frames guns that came about in the 1990's.  The current leaders, Colt and DPMS, are kicking that trend to the curb, and moving forward, back to the original really.  The Colt 901 is like an AR10 length carrier, with the tail narrowed down to AR15 BCG od.  The DPMS GII uses an entire BCG that is the diameter of an AR15.

I think Colt is proving to be more than a survivor.  They are continuing to be a leader, and in more ways than one.  The modular magazine well with the 901, and the space that it allows for upper receiver type variations could prove huge in the military side.

It was on The Firearm Blog last year.  Rick Perry visited the Colt factory, presumably to woo them to TX, and there was a pic taken.

yes, colt has shipped a x39 version to yemen to their "royal guard" b/c they have a metric shit ton of x39 ammo, many such tons.  The problem is it weigs over 9lbs. But that is the versiou w/ the massive rails.

Not the end of the world, but I'd rather see a 1/10 twist.

I wouldn't say that, but there has always been a big hunger in the US market for what is perceived as a "real man's caliber", as well as larger calibers for hunting.

No matter how we slice it, the American market likes their bigger calibers.

The only thing they're putting on them is a heavy profile barrel.

Not interested.

If the pictures I've seen of that version are correct, it's not in the modular family. The mag well area is machined for AK mags, complete with AK type mag release.
Guess it could be modular with Warsaw Pact calibers.

The 7.62x39 colt is model CK901 and is being made for Yemen's republic guard. I guess I was thinking that it was a 2 piece receiver with a  replaceable mag well, looks like I might be wrong though. Now that I think of it I think the AK mag is inserted just like a regular AR mag straight in straight out. So maybe they made it work in that big .308 magwell.

I measured the bolt carrier length yesterday.

It's 7.25" for the 901 AR10 upper.

DPMS LR-308 is 7-7/8".

AR15 is 6-11/16"

Why doesn't Colt sell these to the civilian market?

They're a large firearms manufacturer.

It's almost a truism in the firearms world that any company large enough to meet consumer demand is either entirely clueless or even disdainful of the demands of the consumer market.

Unfortunately, Colt is on it's last legs and these new products may not be around long.  I hate to see such an iconic part of our American history end up like this but a company is only as good as the people running it at that given time and the folks running Colt currently have made a mess of things .
