I'm thinking of buying a DPMS 7.62x51 Oracle but I'm not very familiar with the LR308 platform.

I see that the oracle has a railed gasblock that is secured with two allen screws unlike an A2 style sight which is pinned. I'm wondering if a rifle length rail would slip over this gas block or if there are any good low profile gas blocks that would install without much trouble.

Anyone have any experience with the DPMS Oracle or LR 308 platform?

I've searched but couldn't find much on the Oracle model.

I own one.  The gas block is too big to fit under a rail. DPMS sells a low-pro gas block that works great. I have since replaced mine with a JP adjustable gas block that works even better. The barrel has dimples cut out for the set screws and Troy's gas blocks don't line up properly.

The oracle upper receiver is a lower 'A3' height, so be aware that the top rail on some handguards won't line up properly with your receiver.

Hopefully this helps.

Thanks for the info. I found the DPMS low-pro gas block online. I assume that the Oracle has .750" barrel.

So the Oracle upper is the low (standard A3) height? Any recommendations on a free float for-end. Will a standard AR multi-tool work to remove the LR308 barrel nut?

Have you had good reliability with the Oracle?

Correct.  The gas block diameter should be .750".

The Oracle uses the low 'A3' Height.  I have a Troy MRF 13.8" on mine and it has been working out great.  I'm forgot what other brands offer the lower height.  Check out Samson and MI.

Any standard AR wrench will work.  The Oracle comes with a standard delta ring assembly around the barrel nut.  I would suggest getting an LR308/AR10 receiver block and very sturdy vice to remove the barrel nut.  They didn't use locktite on the nut, but mine sure seemed like it.  I had to put over 130 lbs of torque into getting that SOB off.

I had some small reliability issues when I first got it.  It was double feeding a lot but that was fixed when I switched from the stock DPMS mags to Magpul.

My extractor broke at about 600 rounds.  DPMS replaced it free of charge.  I haven't had an issue with the new one.

It seemed over gassed, so I changed to a JP adjustable gas block.  The recoil is much softer now.  I would eventually like to get a midlength barrel.

Otherwise, it eats anything that I put in it, even some crappy surplus stuff that my local range wanted to get rid of.  It wouldn't fire in any of their rentals.

The accuracy is pretty good.  I can shoot a little over 1 MOA using 168gr HPBTs, but that may just be me.  It really doesn't like lighter bullets though (maybe because of the 1:10 twist).  147gr ball gave me a 4 MOA spread.

I bought a LR 308 Oracle last August and it's a great shooter. With factory ammo, AMAX and TAP FPD 168gr, it will shoot .625" groups at 100 yards. I did a lot of research before I bought mine and the only problem that seemed wide spread was feeding issues with the DPMS mags.  I bought Pmags when I bought the rifle and have never had a feed issue with mine.  I put on a low pro gas block and bought a Apex Gator Grip free float handguard that I really like. It comes without rails so you buy only the rails that you need and they come in different lengths. My rifle is a bench gun so I didn't need a lot of rails. I got a full length one for the top and a small 4" one for the bottom to attach a bipod with.  I've only got 360 rounds through mine so far but NO malfunctions of any type so far. Mines a keeper for sure.

Here's mine after a number of mods!!!

I picked her up this morning. Here she is box stock.

Seems well put together. Great size and weight for a .308 !

I can't wait  to strip her down and oil her up.

My primary use for this piece will be deer hunting and I prefer iron sights. I tend to get a lot of close up running shots.

I'm interested in the K.A.C. U.S.M.C. micro flip up rear sight (200 m-600 m) but it only has one small aperture. Otherwise, I'm considering a Midwest Industries flip up rear sight that offers dual (A2 or match) apertures. Any opinions on the best rear B.U.I.S. for fast moving targets within 50-100 m?

Also, trying to decide between a Midwest Industries drop in quad rail (which I have on my AR-15) paired with a gas block mounted flip up front sight or some type of free float rail paired with low-pro gas block and a standard flip up front sight.

I appreciate your comments,

Hawk.

I did the Troy rail (the smooth one with holes not slots) and magpul buis. works real well and plenty of room for a scope or adition rail underneith for a bi-pod

Mine has been good so far. I have only put 100 rounds down range so far. Mine started out just like yours, then I put some bolt on stuff on it and changed the stock stuff to magpul stuff.

ive had several LR308's  love them.   my latest one i picked up for deer hunting, i went with the ap4 with the shorter 16" barrel. and collapsable stock.  much better then my last 18" Hbar with a2 stock! for deer hunting that is,  the hbar was awesome on a bench!  extremely good shooter!  took a nice 8 pt at 375 yds last fall   1 shot thru the heart with it.  both guns shoot best w 168g match

Thanks for all the feedback and all of the awesome photos!

I'm starting to piece together my build. It's going well. Parts availability is a little hit and miss.

I'm going to post some more photos as the build progresses.

The good news is I have started to score some .308 ammo!

Ha ! I have a larger 6 - 24 x scope that requires the cantilever effect. With this shorter 1.75 - 4 x scope, given the required eye relief, the mount can be used either way. I tried it both ways. I prefer it like this.

I've installed the DPMS micro gas block and Apex handguard.

Still planning to install a full length top rail and flip up front sight. I'm also looking for an M4 style stock.

I replaced the stock with an M4 type and went with a 1-4 x scope with illuminated reticle. Also got the top rail for the Apex handguard. I still need a front sight for it. I'm thinking Troy Battle Sight.
