Can anyone tell me if there is much difference between 4140 and 4150 barrels?  I was thinking of getting a Stag upper but a buddy of mine said that they use 4140 steel barrels and not 4150.  He couldn't really tell me why this was not as good so I thought I would ask on the forum.  Is there any real difference?  Also, is chrome lining good for extending barrel life or is it irrelevant on a semi-auto?

Unless you'r firing lots of full auto 4140 will do just fine.

Chrome lining is good for extending barrel life, but not needed.

4140 is also used by RRA and other manufactures. Get the Stag, it's a good BBl and in less   you just want to be cool, or your going to use it like a minigun 4140 will be more than ok for your need

4150 has much more carbon in the steel making it much harder and it also makes it more resistant to heat.  Great for full auto work but much more than what is needed in a civilian semi auto.

the 40 in 4140 steel represents the amount of carbon  .40%
the 50 in 4150 again represnts the amount of carbon   .50%
other than that they are identical.

it isnt a lot of difference the 4150 has a higher hardenability thats all... no big difference really. just a gov spec... remember they order $1000 hammers.

yes, difference, but one that the general public will not need.  It you are going to shoot  a thousand rounds in a day go with the 4150.  If you are going to shoot around 50 to 100 then go with the 4140

25% increase in carbon makes the steel much harder and heat resistant.

1've put 1,000 rounds down range in a afternoon on a M1A med SS SA barrel. Rifle Still holds 1.2 MOA @ 200 yards (irons) using black hills match ammo.

You do realize stainless barrels are neither 4140 nor 4150, right?

yep.

From the wind in here SS is "suposed" to be worst of the 3 barrel materials.

Has anyone considered heat treatment and its effect on barrel life?  4150 does have .10% more carbon, but can the advantages of extra carbon be screwed up buy poor heat treatment and quality control?  Just a thought.

People can get caught up on numbers and still get an inferior barrel due to poor quality.  What I'm saying is that 4150 doesn't automatically mean quality.  Poor manufacturing quality could negate 4150's advantages.  Unfortunately, verification of the hardness and chemistry would required destructive testing and most people would not want to destroy a barrel to see what they actually got.  All the more reason to go with reputable companies.

RRA uses Wilson 4150 barrels if I'm not mistaken.
