I am still looking for pictures of JFK with an AR15/M16. The best one I remember seeing was when he was firing from his boat. Does anybody have .jpg's or links? |

No, there's a pic out there showing him firing an AR off the stern of what looks like a pleasure boat, but I can't seem to find it right now. It's been posted here before.
I have never seen that picture before. Then again, I am only 19. But nonetheless, I would like to see it!
Yeah, I thought we were looking for some photoshopped pic. I'm interested too.
The only JFK M16 photo that I have seen is in the Oval Office.

You know, I think I've seen that pic as well. It was years ago though.

There was a pic in Life or Time magazine with JFK shooting his AR15 off the back of his yacht. Supposedly he used it to shoot at sharks while sailing in FL. When I get back to my storage in CA I'll see if I can find the magazine with the pic in it.

Somebody should take out an ad with that picture. I could just see the liberals cringe when they see it.
I want to put it in the living room. If you could get pictures of all the presidents shooting guns it would make a great ad and a political statement. President Kennedy is icing on the cake. I read some of his speeches a few years ago and it was pure Ronald Reagan. |

View Quote I think you are confusing Kennedy with Hemmingway. Old Ernie used to shoot sharks with his Thompson SMG from his boat around the Florida Keys. I do have reference to JFK and the AR-15 on his boat, though no photos. In the book The World's Assault Rifles, Musgrave and Nelson, 1967, you find the following paragraph on pages 442-443: That Mr. Kennedy was strongly impressed by the AR-15 is evidenced by the fact that he obtained two of them for his own use and frequently took them out in his boat. Like many ordinary citizens, he enjoyed plinking at bobbing tin cans and other flotsam. The President appreciated fine firearms and knew how to care for them. He had special storage cases made for the Ar-15s to protect them from salt spray. View Quote |

I'd love to see that pic too. JFK is probably the only democratic president to even shoot an AR15/M16, much less hold one. Damn those dirty dems sure have changed a lot since his time.

No luck yet? I remember offering a MD-AR15.com CD-ROM to the first person that could post the picture in the GD forum.
The offer still stands... |

I could swear there was a thread here, sometime in the last few months, that had both the above picture and a pic of JFK shooting an AR off his boat. I've tried every search I can think of, and can't find it.
However, a search in the photo server did come up with a hit, but it was in a private gallery and couldn't be viewed. [:(] |

That picture in the oval office was one I found and posted the link to when I first asked this question. I spent hours on Google on several occasions and that was all I came up with. Even that link is obscure, belongs to a private citizen, and is a scan of printed material so it has dots when enlarged. I think "they" are keeping the photos hidden. Even the Kennedy Library limits what is shown on the web. The photographer is most likely White House Photographer Cecil Stoughton. There are several books of his photographs. Perhaps one on those has it. |
I have a dim recollection of that being a photo in Life Magazine. I would have been in gradeschool then, and seeing the Pres shooting a real gun off a boat makes a big impression on a boy at that age.
I know where there is a complete collection of Life magazines for sale, but at 25 bucks a pop, I need to know which issue. |
I just moved again and haven't been had time to go back out to CA in 2 years. I have the pic in storage. I'll try to post it as soon as possible. I think it's a 1961/62 issue of Life or Time magazine. He made reference to having it to shoot sharks just like Hemmingway did. If I remember correctly there are two pics. One of him standing and shooting it and one of him sitting with it resting behind him. Pics look like he's off the coast of FL. Maybe some ones library has back issues or the copy on microfiche.

I've seen it, he's got the JFK smile going, looks like he's on a yacht.
Even before the M16 was adopted by our armed forces, Kennedy was given one as a gift. He kept it on his yacht and enjoyed shooting at driftwood and other floating debris. I saw the pic a few years ago in a book about JFK.
I went through the first 29 pages of a google image search on "JFK" and turned up nothing.
Found the picture of him with the M16 a few times though. |

I sent an email to the John F. Kennedy Library in Boston, MA to see if they had the picture. This is the response I received: [blue]"Your question was forwarded to my attention in the Audiovisual Archives of the John Fitzgerald Kennedy Library. I am not immediately aware of any images of President Kennedy firing a weapon from his boat. I do recall an image of him while Senator firing a hand gun at a testing facility in Massachusetts in 1958, but that is the only thing that immediately comes to mind. Please contact me directly for further discussion of this request, or if I may be of any other service."[/blue] So the search continues. |

Can you all imagine the shot that would be flung is W.had an "evil black sniper rifle" in his Oval Office?
If we find the JFK W/ an AR on his yacht pic we need to post that all over DU and let them know JFK was an AWB lover. |
I could be wrong, but I think JFK was pro-gun. I guess it wasn't a family thing.

This may help with the picture search. The Yachts may look similar but they are different.
JFK Yacht was: Honey Fitz Presidential Yacht was: Sequoia Life Magazine issues '58-'63, might be able to narrow it down to what issue of Life it was. pics. pics,...pics.???
Someone needs to go the public Lib. and look at the microfiche of 1960's LIFE magazines. please, do it for the children....... |
If memory serves me correctly, JFK was not only pro-gun, but an NRA member as well. Back then you were considered "strange" if you weren't in the NRA. Anti-gun just held their tongue. My, how times have changed. Now they won't shut up!

Here is the latest from the John F.Kennedy Library: [blue]"We do hold the original of the image showing President Kennedy holding the M-16 (with Gen. Clifton holding a crossbow) made in the Oval Office on 19 April 1963, and could provide to you a very good high-resolution JPEG file of the image, should you desire. The cost for that would be $22.25. "In the meantime, I will search for the image of Senator Kennedy firing the hand gun, and reply with appropriate information when I have located it. The image will be copyrighted, however, and so a digital file that will be placed in a public forum or on a web page can not be provided without the expressed consent of the copyright holder. We can provide a print to you under "fair use", but again, if you scan the image and place it on a web page or publish it in any form, you will need to seek copyright clearance."[/blue] If I understand it correctly, the Oval Office JPEG is in the public domain. If so, I plan on ordering it and posting it here. It would sure be better than the scanned one with all the dots. The copyright issue brings up one more thing to deal with. Is anyone here familiar with how to request permission to post copyrighted photos? We might end up with quite a few by the time we are done collecting and it would be nice to have them tacked to the AR forum. |

Quoted: [blue] if you scan the image and place it on a web page you will need to seek copyright clearance."[/blue] View Quote I have to call [bs] on that. If that were true everyone who has posted a pic on this site that they did not take themselves would be illegal. |

Quoted: feel like taking orders? I'll send money + shipping if you are up to it. View Quote The Oval Office picture appears to be in the public domain. If so, they would just charge for the trouble of scanning it. I could then post it here and anyone could download a copy free. You can then print it or take it to have 8x10s made for the family room. For "fair use" photographs that the JFK Library prints up it would be better to order directly from them once they find them. When I get more information on it I'll post it here. They have a limited number of pictures already listed on their website. The librarian is going out of his way to be helpful and is probably spending a considerable amount of time going through the archives to find the photographs. I can't wait to see what he turns up. |
