Is anyone having any luck with subsonic .300BLK loads on hogs? Most of the stuff I've been reading looks like the results aren't very good. I haven't been able to find any reports from people using real hunting bullets though. It was all SMK's and AMAX. All of the one shot kills I read about were headshots.

With proper shot placement and some luck you can find youtube videos of hogs killed with .177 pellet guns.  I have shot a couple of hogs and squirrels with my .300 blackout and subsonic they all took multiple hits and they all went quite a distance before expiring.  That being said they all did die.   I tried the 220 smk and a 220 round nose.  Both produced through and through wounds with no expansion or tumbling.  I also have casted some of the lead NOE 247gr bullet but have not tried them on hogs yet because the reports came back the same through and through 30 cal pencil hole.   I was so disappointed I retired the blackout for a .45 acp carbine for when I need to be discreet.  Although a subsonic bullet hitting a hog or any animal make a fairly loud sound.   Until they develop a bullet that is affordable and expands reliably at subsonic speed the .300 blackout is nothing but a paper and tin can hole puncher for me.

220 round nose subsonic exit wound.

Entrance side he took 6-7 hits.  ran about 100 yards.

Entrance aprox 50 yards.  Ran 15 yards to a tree then up the tree after around 10 min he fell but was still alive had to head shot to finish the job.  Again pencil hole not much tissue damage.

Exit and you can see the exit from the point blank head shot no expansion there either.

But did you want to eat them, or get rid of them? They'll die for sure with SMKs or 5.45, hopefully far away from where you need to take care of the carcass if you don't intend to eat them. Just not fast.
In before people equate destructive pest control with humane hunting.

Some will die a lot will survive I kill hogs with previous bullet wound quite often.  I prefer DRT confirmed kills.

Most people do, but these aren't deer.
That said, shot placement is key as always. You can kill pretty much anything smaller than an elephant with .22 short if you hit them in the right place.
I doubt many lung/spine/heart/liver etc. shots survive.

I understand they aren't deer I hunt hogs for eradication purposes.  I like DRT because I know exactly how many and what I killed if its not laying there dead it does not count.  Your right about the lung/spine/heart/liver shots but your talking a bout a very small target area of the hog.  Unless your just planning on shooting one hog with perfect shot placement then that target area gets hard to hit when they are running every direction at full speed.  I prefer something that will knock them down with a hit and disable or slow them down enough to finish the job.  Back on topic the .300 blackout is lacking in this area and subsonic its near worthless in my test with it.

FatMcNasty is working on projectiles for subs that will remedy that.

We hunt mostly for farmers and on our own property. I have dropped a pig drt with the 5.45 but it was beong still and a head shot. Modt of our hints pigs are running after first shot. Its nice to let the farmer know how many exactly you killed. Its an inside joke and nickname for my buddy. We all have indian nivknames. His is dozens wounded. But hey mine is hung on fence.

Texaslawman1, the problem you have as you describe it is because of bullet selection, which you have already realized.  I have not shot hogs yet, but I have 10 White tail deer under my belt, or in the freezer, using Subsonic. The tumbling effect can be very effective, but the problem I have seen is in faster twist barrels tumbling will not happen when it is inside the animal while on a broadside shot.  I have 1/10 twist 300 blk that produces tumbling very quickly upon entrance, but my 1/8.5 and 1/7 twist barrels the bullet will travel over 14 inches or more before tumbling. there fore punching a .30 cal hole right thru.

If I might suggest something. Get  a forster hollow point jig from midway.

Forster Hollow point Jig 1/8 inch

Use it on your NOE 247gr cast bullet and you will be very pleased with the results.  If you do not have a Forster trimmer, or a old pacific type like I do,the bit may fit on a few other case trimmers but I don't know for sure.

I actually ended up using a 1/8 inch drill it in my drill press and drilled the hole down to 3/4 of an inch.  but tested several with the supplied bit and was very happy with the results.

Some results with the cast hollow Point

Exit wound

Liver

Many a squirrel gave up his life this past season using a 120g cast hollow point out of my model 7, but a few went down with the NOE cast also.

Yes.  I have done it without powder coat and traditional lube, and.it works well.   Fully powder coated does.not give as much expansion.  Leaving the tip bare gave the most conistant expansion.
