AREA OF CONSIDERATION: This position is open to: (1) current or former Federal employees with career status; (2) Indian Preference candidates; (3) Veterans who are preference eligible or have been separated from the Armed Forces under an honorable discharge after substantially completing three of more years of service; and (4) Candidates eligible under a non-competitive hiring authority. Job Summary:  The Office of Justice Services, within the Bureau of Indian Affairs, is searching for an individuals to serve as Police Officer for the Division of Law Enforcement Services, Standing Rock Agency, Fort Yates, ND.  The mission of the Office of Justice Services is to uphold the constitutional sovereignty and customs of Tribes while protecting the rights of all people; protect life and property; ensure employment suitability; and promote and preserve peace within Indian country. The OJS has law enforcement responsibilities for crimes committed on, or involving, Indian country. This includes major Federal crimes and state crimes under Federal statute and tribal laws.



Salary Information: GL-3: $30,216 - $37,768; GL-4: $33,920 - $42,397; GL-5: $39,012 - $48,505; GL-6: $41,130 - $51,702.  First time hires to the Federal government start at the lower salary range of the grade level.



This is a full-time, permanent position. The full performance level of this position is GL-08.



If your non native that is OK also as long as you have military back ground!They are looking to hire 2 on the usajobs post and 7 as a direct hire! The direct hire are only being looked at if an officer from Standing Rock recommends them.We are a busy agency work long hours make great money and you work with great Officers! I will tell you we are a rural department back up can be up to an hour away at times we patrol an area bigger then some states with only 4 officers at times( This is why we are trying to hire more people!) Just curious on why you require military or federal experience? Would a lateral from a county sheriff office/department be acceptable?

Yes you will be going to Artesia unless you have been to another police academy they MIGHT give you a waver then you have to go to a bridge course for two weeks.

Heh just wondering, I was at Artesia for another agency. I was curious if all BoIA Police went through there.  Their instructors looks pretty squared away...some of the students...well I'd have to say AA hire

Unless things have changed drastically, for Fed LEO jobs, only a Fed lateral would be workable.  This is definitely unfortunate as we've passed up many an exceptional candidate....

Was he tribal or BIA? Only agency I know around there is UTE MOUNTAIN UTE AGENCY. That is a small quite agency! I have been working at mine for 3.5 years make near $100K it has its ups and downs but not like another department I worked for! What gets you the most is the court but after you learn to not let it get to you then your fine.

That's why I'm posting here I have had enough of people wanting a paycheck and not wanting to do a job!

That would probably change if BIA started basing their selection process off of things like qualifications and experience instead of Title 25 USC § 472

(That's not directed towards you, there are many great BIA officers and some I call friends, but their hiring practice is broken.)

Tell me about that I'm not native I know and I will tell anyone who is not native that a patrol officer is all they are going to be in the BIA. I could tell you stories about officers drunk on duty and  a lot more ( Lets put it that our tax money payed for abortion on one officer and then her night of drinking after it was done!)

I will tell anyone the flat truth about how screwed up this place and department is! I will also tell anyone about how much experience you gain not only on the patrol level but on all levels! Like I said I have worked a lot "Criminal Investigator" jobs from start to just about the end all they did was sit down and talk with the person I arrested it was my report collection of evidence and the guy being a dumb ass staying that "He stabbed the dumb b*tch" on tape that got this guy life.

I will say that I do work with most guys who like to work we only have three that don't!!

In the Miami area they mostly arrest drunk non-Indians at 3 out of the 12 casinos in the area for public intox. Most of the tribes have their own Police Departments.  I worked at one until the boredom got to be too much to bear.

Between Indian preference, remote duty and low pay, we can surmise that BIA doesn't always attract the highest caliber applicants. I don't believe they attend Land Management Police Training any longer which previously assisted BIA officers with moving onto better paying LE jobs within natural resources law enforcement.
