A friend of mine want to get rid of all the fish in his little farm pond without draining the pond. He's got some fairly large catfish in there but wants them out all at one go (I think he wants to restock and give the new fish a chance), and wants to give away all of the meat. I asked him if he had an old crank phone, but he doesn't. I don't know of anybody with one. So, anybody have any thoughts? The pond is just barely too deep to seine.
I was thinking that a sparkler bomb maybe could work, but haven't tested to see if I could get one to ignite underwater. |

Would a car battery and jumper cables work? It crossed my mind, but I've never tried it. |

backpack shocker? A defibrulator? A defibrulator would be sweet. You would get to yell CLEAR!!! And then shock the shit out of the fish! Please post video. |

I'm afraid it's going to take some serious juice to bring the catfish to the surface. We do tons of aquaculture work and the best advice I can give you is to either drain the pond or contact your local ag extension agent in and see if he has some advice. Google 'aquaculture' for your area and see who pops up. Also, don't be in a big hurry to poison the pond, the law of unintended consequences may bite you in the butt! Good luck.

Just don't stand in the freakin' water when you shock the fish, so we don't have to have another epic Arfcom thread. BTW... maybe some underwater bump-firing might stun the fish? |

Seen it done with a 1/4 stick, but never seen it done with electricity.

This works well for trout, I don't see why it can't be used for catfish.

Leave an inch of the sparkler sticking out of a hole just big enough. This should keep water out long enough...... I would totally help you out as sparkler upgrades are my expertise. |

get a single shot break action shotgun and just fire some magnum slug loads through it under water.
|
|
You probably have a catfish farmer not too far from you. Call them and ask for advice.
|
|
Get a pile of horse chestnuts mash them up to a powder and spread it liberally on the pond. Its a natural poison.

You will need some kind of magneto crank like an old air raid siren. You'll attach the cables to two metal poles and stick them in the water. The only area affected will be between the poles so you will have to move around or stay in a john boat or something. The only way to get all of the fish out would be with a chemical like rotenone pyrethrin.

Google monkey fishing.
This should point you in the right direction. http://www.folioweekly.com/documents/folio0818main_000.pdf |

I've heard about using calcium carbide, for old lamps, put into a glass jar with a few holes poked in the top will stun them. I'm guessing you would have to weight it down in some way, Never tried it, but if you do be sure to get video.
ETA: would a car battery and a power inverter(sp) work. |
|
Your going to need a lot of power to deliver enough to the whole pond at once.
Car batteries are way to low a voltage. Depending on the waters conductivity and the size of the pond even 120 or 240 V may not be enough. Explosives are a more likely idea. Water transmits pressure waves very nicely. |
|
The easiest way to get rid of all the fish in the pond is to use a chemical called Prenfish. I work for a lake management company and its what we use to kill old lakes that people want to start over on. The fish will start to die immediately and after about 30 days it is safe to add more fish to the pond.
ETA: If you're shocking just catfish you need a low voltage output (most people use an old crank phone). We have 2 boats that we use to shock up fish and each one puts about 10,000 volts into the water. It works well on scaled fish but does not bring up non-scaled/catfish very well. |

1/4 stick of dynamite, or one of the binary explosives used to blow beaver dams and stumps.

Tag. Anyone got a video of this actually working? Don't have a video of it, but I shock up fish everyday at work. |
|
Shocking won't get them all. You need to use Rotenone, but it's expensive and I think it ruins the meat.
|
|
1) Make a small raft
2) Place large bottle of tannerite on small raft 3) Ignite tannerite 4) Collect fish 5) Post video |

I don't have any explosives except a couple of bear bangers for my pen flare (which I might try). I know for a fact that a well constructed sparkler bomb will put out one hell of a concussive force. 3 college kids from OU are on a terrorist watchlist for letting one off in my neighborhood––-my wife automatically thought it was me that blew something up.
Since I don't have a magneeto, I think that shocking them is pretty much out unfortunately. No horse chestnuts around here either. |

The wildlife people in this state shock stun fish for fish population counts, so you might check with your state's wildlife agency, they should be able to give you some advice on what to do.

How does it work?
Electricity is passed through the water, by two types of electrodes, the anode (positive) and the cathode (negative). When applying the correct current, fish will experience a muscle response reaction called taxis. This will cause a swimming motion toward the anode. Once the fish reaches the anode, swimming will stop. The fish will go into a state of narcosis (stunned). Narcosis will only last for a few seconds. At this point, the fish are netted and put into a holding tank for observation. After observation, the fish are released. |

Why not drain out most of the water, then seine net the fish out, then finish pumping out the rest of the water?

Why not drain out most of the water, then seine net the fish out, then finish pumping out the rest of the water? We're getting some decent rainfall right now, but his pond is already 3-ft down, and he doesn't want to risk not being able to fill it back up if our rainfall doesn't continue. We sometimes get some serious dry spells. |

Contact your state's Department of Natural Resources and ask them.

here ya go.....btw not legal in Texas but would be a good SHTF tool to have
Shit that one doesn't work in a pond, but a little time on google will find you one that does. |

old school telephone I will only work in mineral rich soil bottoms. I have several that my GrandPa took off poachers. They are illegal to use in most states. An electric fence shocker should work also. |
