Fail Safe was a stupid movie. Liberal bullshit during the Cold War no less.....
The only entertaining part for me was when the one B-58 fired a fictional defensive air to air missile and shot down a Soviet fighter, which was depicted on the Big Screen as a nuke. The entire staff in the ops center stood up and cheered. One of the senior USAF officers yelled at them "SHUT UP!! THIS ISN'T SOME FOOTBALL GAME!" I had to laugh. |

The worst mistake in Fail Safe on the Hustler was they had the crew all able to see each other. Not so.

In Fail-Safe, the supersonic bombers were called Vindicators. There's no such jet, so they used footage of B-58s. The other posters are correct, the crew members cannot see each other in a B-58.
There was also footage of a squadron of US fighters sent to intercept the Vindicators. The stock footage was of different types of fighters - F-101s, F-102s, F-104s. Obviously, a squadron would have been all of one type of aircraft. The producers couldn't even get that right. Still, it's one of my favorite movies. If you want to see a completely different take on accidental nuclear war, check out Dr. Strangelove. |

Dr. Strangelove has one of the BEST simulated firefights of any movie. An airborne infantry company takes back the Air Force base. Very realistic.

I had a model B58 when I was a kid. I also saw a dilapidated one at Little Rock AFB near the northeast end of the runway. I doubt it is still there.

Saw it multiple times..................the USAF officer flew the B-58 and nuked NYC on the President's orders––––the pilot's wife was in NYC, which was one of the reasons he was losing it at the beginning when he went to see the matador

Now, on the subject at hand, as I recall, the bombers were called something else in the movie. The video was of B-58s, but they called them something else and I can't think of the name right now. I want to say "Vindicator" but I might be thinking of one of the old torpedo planes like the USN started WWII with. Ah, I see someone else already posted about it being called a Vindicator. |

The pilot bombing Moscow was following orders. That's the basis for the book and movie. The Machine failed initially, but there was never any thought to the machine failing, so ultimately.. But the pilot followed his orders and training. Once the go order was given, it was his job to disregard anything else but a failsafe machine recall. |
