The expiration date is Feb 24,2011. I bravely opened the container and took a deep breath. It smells like Parmesan still, and looks fine.
Is it safe to eat ? Would you eat it ? |
|
Depends. If it's in a green can, it's just flavored sawdust and was never OK to eat in the first place. Otherwise, probably GTG. You pay more for Parm that's been aged longer... biggest problem would be that the grated stuff has dried up too much.

Personally I would eat it, that means its fine. Disclaimer: I am not a doctor or anyone who has the slightest clue about food safety and I did not stay in a Holiday Inn last night. |

You're not going to die.
Saturday morning I made myself a breakfast sandwich, and afterwards I noticed that the date on the jar of mayo I had used was January 2011. I'm still breathing (though I'm gonna buy a new jar today, just to be safe.). |

As an aside, I am currently reading a book about the civil war. If the average person today had to eat what some of those soldiers did the world would be a lot skinnier. |

I wouldn't, but I'd give it to my youngest and wait 15 minutes.

Real parmesan doesn't come in a jar or have an expiration date
Don't eat that crap at all. Speed |

Repackage said Parmesan sawdust 2. Re-label as Parmeggiano Reggiano (or some shit like that) 3. Take to local hippy natural whole food type store 4. Profit? |

Absolutely...dry, hard cheese will last an incredible amount of time. If it is not molded, it is fine. Other cheeses, you can just cut off the mold and the remaining cheese is fine.
|
|
The stuff's SAFE to eat long after it's not GOOD to eat. Taste will suffer but it won't hurt you. All the preservatives in that stuff, you could keep it in your fridge for another couple years and probably be fine-or you could spend the two dollars on a new can and it will taste more like what it should taste like.

not green?
sealed this whole time? smells ok? try it out don't get the shits? you're good to go

The comment about it only being 2 dollars was an attempt at smartass humor, plus now that I see your picture, that can is more like $3.97. |

The seal has been broken for about 1 or 1.5 years by now. I will go with popular opinion and try it out. If i make a urgent post asking to trade a gun for a carton of Charmin ultra strong, you know the cheese was, and i am . For the person who called dibs first, edit for what ya like. Guns, car, or cat. Or fight amongst yourselves. I am foing for the cheese, wish me luck, and don't call me Shirley. |

What IS cheese after all but rotten milk! How much more rotten can it get?

I understand the "best by" dates are arbitrary and made up to reduce liability. But still....I have the shits enough as is. No need to make it worse. lol... |

Your dinner picture is a failure. No gun, knife or even a toe to be seen, just a half empty can of rotting cheese like stuff. Now try it again and be sure to include the wife/girlfriend/hot sister holding it up for us.
|
|
The stuff in the green can is never fit to eat. Only a wedge of Parmesan and a cheese grater are used at our dinner table and kitchen.
But yeah, its probably safe to eat. |
|
If it looks good, smells good, eat it. General rules to live by.

I have a chunk of parmigiano reggiano in the fridge that's older than that.
