For those of you with Casio G-Shocks, how is battery life?
I'm interested in hearing from solar and non-solar owners. I've heard some solar G-Shocks have had battery problems. I've also heard everything from 6 months to 5 years of battery life on non-solar watches. I'm planning on getting some flavor of 5600 pretty soon, trying to see if the $40 or so premium for solar-atomic is worth it. |
|
4 years on mine, regular battery. Looks as new as when I bought it, too. And I'm rough on watches.
|
|
Funny you should ask, my solar/atomic is dead. I 'charge' it as often as I can but it won't seem to hold.
Am planning on contacting them this week... will post what I find. |

I have a Gshock I bought in 1990 before I deployed to DS, it is still running the original battery.
True story. ETA The bezel (plastic case surrounding the steel watch body) broke down after a few years of exposure to CLP, salt water, desert air, sunlight, etc and I did have to replace that. I found a replacement on a watch forum and paid something like $150 for the bezel and a watchband. They're not made anymore (DW-5700 with screw down caseback) and some guy in Brazil had some new old stock and demanded a premium for them. Yes I have a sentimental attachment to that watch. |

I am on my 8th year with a solar, only problem with mine is the back lighting feature died a couple years ago.
|
|
I have had a MTG-900 (solar power) for a few years and have not had any kind of problem with the power. I dont even think about it. Just set it by the window at night before I go to bed to get the sync every so often and its good to go the next morning.

i have a gshock gw-7900b
http://www.amazon.com/Casio-GW7900B-1-G-Shock-Atomic-Digital/dp/B00309HQPK had it for about 8 months. no issues with battery. it is the solar one. |

I have an old as hell G-Shock 701D that I never wear anymore, I've had it 6-7 years and the battery is still going fine. Has never been changed. In fact the time on it, other than not being adjusted for DST, is only off by 12 minutes.
ETA: Non-solar, non "atomic", backlight still works fine. |
|
Buy the atomic. It's nice to kow that the time is always dead on. Why? I don't know, but it seemed like a good reason to spend $40 more.
I have both in the mudman series. The non-solar/non atomic is my work watch. The solar/atomic is my going to town watch. So, there you have it..... Get both. |
|
I've had a G-Shock in one of my drill rigs strapped to a pressure gauge for the past 8 years. It's open to the elements, dirt and grime of real work and it's still just fine. I just got a triple sensor pathfinder tough solar for Christmas this year so 8 days and still going strong with that one!

GW5600J Atomic Solar since Apr 2008. Works great.
The only issue I've had with the solar is the battery went dead right after the time change last Nov. Going to work in the dark and coming home in the dark, and working indoors left it drained. A couple hours on the windowsill in bright sunshine and it went right back up, with no issues since. I like it and would buy it again. |

I've never had to change the battery on one. I've had three...one I lost while moving, another I loaned to my wife and she left it at the city pool, and the current one I wear.

Solar. Purchased in January 2004. Still going and everything functions. This is my "rough duty" watch though. It's been diving, shooting, etc. Only wear it a couple times a week.

1 year no problems on my atomic....solar This. Solar, FTMFW. |

And just a warning, as evident by the G-Shock website, the G-Shock watch is apparently the chronological horological equivalent of 22" chrome wheels.

stellar. easily 7-8yrs. My first / original G-Shock is only on its 3rd battery. My newer Solar is 4yrs(?) in with no tribble at all.

It's a G-Shock, not a Rolex. When the battery quits, toss it and buy a new watch.

I got 2.5 years out of my battery, but who knows how long it was running before I bought the watch.
Not a solar watch. Bought in Iraq. Battery was maybe $5 at Walgreens, and easy to change. |

I bought mine at the beginning of 2007 and no problems with it whatsoever. I predict it will outlast me. The battery has never even left "H"(solar atomic model)

I have a $60 G Stock atomic solar (Module 2688). Going on 1 year, but I am interested to know the lifespan of the battery as well.
It uses a CTL1616 rechargeable coin cell battery. I can't seem to find the chemistry, but I'd say it is Lithium based. Don't these usually have a shelf life of at least 10 years, sort of like the 1/3N cells used in Aimpoints? |

I have the solar GW-500A I purchased it in 2005 and it is still going strong! I wear it everyday and it has lasted longer than any watch I have worn previously.

My solar dies all the time. Not its fault, really. It lived in a walmart display case forever. Then I bought it, and spent 2 months on a ship and hardly every saw daylight. Now that I'm back home and was able to give it a solid charge, it seems to be holding up. I guess Alaska is tough on solar toys during the winter.
