Which is to say: The Thermapen is worth the $100 bucks. I will never use a cheapo thermometer ever again unless forced to do so.

This.  $100 is pricey for a thermometer when you can buy one anywhere for $5...but this thing will really improve your cooking.  The LaRue of cooking thermometers

Another vote for the thermapen.
Worth every single penny.

I'm looking more for an occasional use digi thermometer. If I'm gonna drop $100 on a kitchen item i think it's gonna be the global g-5 nakiri I've been eyeing.

Why does it need to be digital?

The makers of the Thermapen now have a cheaper alternative. The Thermopop runs about $30 on Amazon. I plan to order one myself, because there's no way in hell I'm going to spring for a Thermapen. Kitchen thermometers disappear like lighters and ink pens.

I have one of these and have used it for many years ...

Might not be quite as "instant" as a Thermapen, but having to wait an extra 5 or 10 seconds doesn't really ruffle my feathers. Plus, for ~ $12.00 (iirc) when I bought it at Target years ago, the price was right vs. $100 for the Thermapen.

We had a Thermapen for several years before it was destroyed. Completely worth the money if you are the only one using it or have people who are good about taking care of things. Otherwise Thermoworks has put out several less expensive options that are very good. (as already mentioned) The Thermopop wasn't out at Christmas time or I am sure I would have one.

It's hard to beat a Thermapen.  I have two of them.  One is about seven years old has been in my work knife case since I bought it.  About five years in I had to change the battery, and once I did so it required calibration but it's held it since.  I have a second one, the newer splashproof version, but it doesn't get used much since the old one keeps working.  I should note that aside from needing to calibrate it once (in ice and boiling water) it has been dead on.  Since I use it for a lot of sous vide stuff I do verify the accuracy often, both in a properly prepared ice bath and against a pair of calibrated circulators.  Reads dead on within a tenth of a degree.  It's hard to top a Thermapen; it's actually pretty cheap for what it does.

Thermapens are great. So is having a lot of money. If you can't afford the Thermapen, you can't afford it. This Comark is pretty good for the $$$.

No, it probably won't survive if you drive your Hummer over it, but you will get pretty accurate, fast readings until you do.

I use Taylor thermometers (both analog and digital) and have no complaints. I like the ones with the wired probe for cooking large cuts of meat. Keeping your thermometer calibrated is key.

Here's a new option that I might give a try:

Just get a Fluke  digital multimeter and a thermocouple.

OK, here's one for the experts in the same line of thought: what do you recommend for going to 800-1000 degrees?  My wife just got a tandoor for her birthday and we need to be able to read the temperature on that to determine when it's at its peak, which is within that range.  Obviously not every thermometer will do that.

Laser thermo gun. Shoot the laser on the walls. Just be sure to get one that can read in that range. Mine's a Fluke, but I needed a good one because I use it for work.
