I just noticed today that my rear running lights aren't "on" when I run my Vstar.  The turn signals work fine, it's just no lights when the bike is running.   Any suggestions.  The front are working fine.  Could it be a bulb burned out, but the blinker part is still good?

Shit.

Ok, well I checked the fuses, and nothing blown.   I hope you're right, but why not have them run on the rear?  They run on the front.

Well, I'm not very good at reading those, but it sure as hell looks like it doesn't have running lights on the rear.

ETA: somehow this is all seeming familiar too.   I think maybe I "found" this out last year when I first purchased it.   Now, I'm really feeling like a dumbass.

Is there a switch to turn the rear running lights on at night?

FWIW, my Yamaha Roadliner and my old Yamaha 750 had front and rear running lights that came on whenever the ignition was in the 'On' position.  On both bikes it is the rear running light is the "low" version of the brake light, while the turn signals are only turn signals.

I spent last weekend replacing my 'Liner's rear turn signals with run/turn/brake LEDs and wired the running lights into the blue wire, which powers both the stock rear running light and the license plate light.

Nope, no switch, they aren't even hooked up to the blue wire.    Only the front lights and the rear tail come on all the time.   They are strictly turn signals.   I may do what you did and hook up some LEDs.   Got any suggestion to kits that look good?    Mines a 2001 1100 classic.

Sounds normal to me... headlights + tail light on all the time. I don't know that I've seen a bike with additional "running lights" that are on all the time, or a bike whereby the turn signals (either front or rear) were on a low power as "running lights".

My fronts are on all he time, low.   That's why I thought something was wrong.

These are what I installed:  http://customdynamics.com/motorcycle_dynamic_clusters.htm

I bought the 'hardwire' ones that are just a basic little puck with 4 wires coming out the back, spliced them into the existing brake and running wires, and epoxied the pucks into the existing lens housings.  Also installed a resistor unit because LEDs draw so little power that the turn signal controller will think you have a burnt out bulb and do the fast-blink thing.  I also installed a brake light flasher while I was at it.

The lights on the back of the Stratoliner suck.  I knew it from riding behind guys who have them and when I got mine I started getting complaints from the guys I ride with.  The same guys say that my lights are great after installing the LEDs.

Just a comment, I had a VStar 650, and replaced the rear bulb with one of those LED board inserts, and it was nicely brighter than the incandescent bulb.  Definitely a "worth it" upgrade.

I think I'm convinced.    I just need to wait till the first.   I wonder if the same company above has the brake insert too?

Custom dynamics makes a lot of different inserts and replacements.

I use to have a 99 road star. I bought a set of stock front signal housings and installed those on the rear so that I would have three tail lights on the rear for better visibility. I just had to do a little wire modification behind the center running/ break light to wire them into the running lights.  On the 99 model the signal lenses were orange so I replace mine with red lenses so I didn't have orange running lights on the rear.

Thanks, I found that too.

Man, oh man, can a guy spend a whole bunch of money fast n this stuff.

I road 120miles today.   Great ride, but at 70mph, my bike sure does have a high rpm.   Wish it had a 6th gear.....    I got to thinking, man I'd love to upgrade to something like a Kawa Vaquero, and how much money I might be wasting on this bike, if I ever do upgrade..    That said, I've got an ivy league education I'm going to have to pay for this fall.   Probably not gong to upgrade anytime soon.

to keep you satisfied in the short term, check out getting a pod type intake system... Metric Magic offers dragons breath, Maxair offers a kit, and S and S Custom cycle does too, I think i mentioned them to you before...Adds 15-20 percent more power, definitely helps a bit with the higher speeds... if you only have stock pipes i wouldnt bother though, lol

I've got it bookmarked.    .   I've got cobra pipes.    I was able to go plenty fast, it just seems the engine vibration at higher rpms, makes even the seat buzz.    At 60mph, alls fine, but past that it gets annoying.     Bike accelerates fine to pass.  I never felt it was under powered, just would make the ride more enjoyable if the rpm was a bit lower at those highway speeds.   Probably just being a puss.

I know what you mean about the RPMs feeling high.  Even on my Stratoliner it feels like that, and it's a bike with tons of power.  I bought an overdrive rear pulley but I haven't decided whether or not I'm going to use it or not.

What RPM are you turning at 70 mph? I ask because I ride an older EG with a 5 speed and felt like I needed another gear but the actual RPM at 65 is around 3500 RPM which is plenty low, maybe you have a loose bolt driving you nutz, check your motor mounts and exhaust bolts. After spending a year and a lot of miles on the EG I have come to prefer the unbalanced 88 with 5 speed to my Wife's internal balanced 96 with 6 speed.

Careful, you may need to re-jet after intake upgrades.   The only real mod I did on my VStar 650 was some Vance & Hines pipes.  OMG it sounded GOOD.  90$ as good as a Harley, but not as loud.

Yup you have to bump up jet size quite a few..Stock I think they are 112.5..After adding pods Im at 150s lol. They are very lean from the factory though...Easy job to do though

The only running light on the rear of a V Star is the tail light. I had a raod star that I rewired so the turns were also running lightd have to chang out to red lenses or clear with red bulbs if you do that though.
