| Just looked up the results. Only 387 shooters. NRA week continues its slide. Probably made housing a lot easier to find. |
| It was not that long ago that ORPA regional matches or Quantico's regional before inter service got nearly that attendance. Creedmoor Cup in Butner had near 200. Something is certainly broken for NRA week and it is sad. I really enjoy shooting that week but have opted for CMP week since 2000. I should plan to attend NRA week in 2013 if my schedule permits. |

People can only go so far with "Supporting the NRA". The entry fees are very high and the awards (for those that get anything) and very low (almost nothing). Most people don't even win enough to pay for the primers and powder they shoot. Don't even think about breaking even on your bullet costs.
Sure, it's a sport; however, CMP week is much more cost effective per shot fired than is NRA week. And, both CMP and NRA use the same range and targets to shoot the same course of fire. Why is one much more expensive than the other? People have only so much money to throw around AND they aren't stupid. Why does the NRA week have fewer attendees? Hint: see the prior sentence. |

My group has always shot CMP week. For us, its a matter of scheduling. With CMP every match stands on its own, you can pick and choose when you want to shoot. Frankly we do this for fun, its our vacation. We typically shoot a couple days, take off a couple, then shoot another match or two. NRA week is four days in a row.
The other reason we shoot CMP week is CMP made the effort to reach out to new shooters. Our first match at Perry was the Garand match in 1999. That is what got us hooked. By 2001 we were running most of the big CMP matches. NRA week has nothing like that. It's all high masters and such. Shooting both weeks is not practical for us. Too much money, too much time away from home, family, job. |
