Does anybody know what the price was for a SP1 back whenever they were introduced?
I recall a quote that in 1986 you could buy a new ar15 for $600 your choice of semi auto or full auto. I know I got into guns in the '90s and I never saw prices anywhere near this low. |

| In the 1980s (around 1983) I bought my AR180 for $375, IIRC. I was a FFL dealer as a side business when I was at the PD. At the time, an AR15 was running $465, or so. The AR180 was about 20% cheaper. When I bought my SP1 Carbine in 1989, I think I gave $650 for it LNIB. the new Sporter Lightweight carbines were around $795 or so then. |
| Part is that people no longer have to have a "real Colt" to have an AR15. The AR15 is the most popular rifle in America, and more Ar15s sell than any other single model of rifle. My featureless M4gery I just built is on a $90 Stag receiver, $60 DPMS LPK, $159 M4 flat top 1/7 T marked PSA (not PTAC) upper (including shipping), $15 charging handle, and an $85 BCG. That's $410 TOTAL! The upper was on a three day blow out for 40% off. In 1990s, (when I was an FFL and assembled lots of AR15s), I used to sell my builds for $375 to $500. |
