Sounds like he had 2nd-3rd team in these the 2nd half. You can't put those kids in there and ask them not to play hard. What's this world coming to? TLDR version Ariz coach wins game 60-0 AD and pricipal threaten to remove from sideline if he scores another point coach played 2nd and 3rd team 2nd half with a Special teams and 2 defensive TD in 2nd half. |

There has to be more to this. I read another article on this today and shit isn’t adding up. Last few games they beat the bricks of their opponents, now it’s an issue. Hell, even the losing coach said he didn't run up the score and he didn't deserve any of this. |
|
The coach of the team they beat was surprised at the coaching change. He doesn't think there was a problem with the score. Cooper Canyon is the team they beat so badly.
Cooper Canyon head coach Sean Freeman told the Arizona Republic he was “surprised” to learn that Dourisseau was out as the coach.
“To me, it was not that big a deal. We just got beat fair and square,” Freeman said, adding “It’s football. And if you're not showing up with your A game that's what happens.” |

Okay, I'm going to shoot from the hip on this one but hear me out. Both schools mentioned in the article tend to be low income minority schools. https://www.usnews.com/education/best-high-schools/arizona/districts/tolleson-union-high-school-district/la-joya-community-high-school-1114
Total Minority Enrollment (% of total) 92% Total Economically Disadvantaged (% of total) 68% (losing school) https://www.usnews.com/education/best-high-schools/arizona/districts/tolleson-union-high-school-district/copper-canyon-high-school-1115 Total Minority Enrollment (% of total) 95% Total Economically Disadvantaged (% of total) 73% Makes me wonder if the school district is getting involved because they don't want big blowouts and having the athletes drop the team out of discouragement. Basically not wanting these kids to say: "Screw being blown out every week and getting embarrassed, I'm not playing anymore." So they're actively discouraging running up the score to make things "fair." And also the fact athletic programs are often good for poor kids because it gives them an outlet/something to do...instead of putting their energy elsewhere like gangbanging/drugs, etc.. Just an idea since the story doesn't make sense. |

Coach was not at fault if indeed he: pulled starters on Offense and Defense Called conservative plays If he just put in a different running back with 1st team Offense or left the starting Defense out there the whole game, then I have a problem. |
|
Quoted: I completely agree with you here. The problem I have is blaming the coach when he pulled his starters. It also sounds like the 2nd half TDs were running plays. (article says 2nd and 3rd team RBs both scored). So if the Coach pulled his starters and was calling conservative plays, that's all he can do. You can't tell those kids on the 2nd-3rd team that don't get to play much to go in and not try. Coach was not at fault if indeed he: pulled starters on Offense and Defense Called conservative plays If he just put in a different running back with 1st team Offense or left the starting Defense out there the whole game, then I have a problem. |

AD and pricipal threaten to remove from sideline if he scores another point. And if anybody said anything to him, he should simply have said, "Sorry, but she said she'd fire me if we scored another point. The only way I could prevent that from happening is if I got all of the kids off the field. Talk to her about it if you don't like it. " |

My 6 year old's soccer coach got a warning for running up the score. We were winning 8-0, 11-1, etc. We didn't really have subs, but he would pull the better kids back to defense. Then little girls who had never played soccer before started scoring. It was awesome. Then they started calling our games early. Which is bullshit since we paid for him to play. |

60-0? If Sabin had a defense his job would be on the line too. Principal https://bloximages.chicago2.vip.townnews.com/westvalleyview.com/content/tncms/assets/v3/editorial/1/68/16850692-ce8a-11e9-89ea-0fd5e532e782/5d6ece75a3791.image.jpg?resize=750%2C500 |

I learned to not take it easy on a team. I played summer league softball throughout high school, and in one game we scored 32 runs in the first two innings. My team started relaxing and screwing around. We obviously had the game won. Then mistakes started and the other team got momentum. Suddenly our throws were off and bats went cold. We lost that game 63 - 37. Imagine giving up over 60 runs in softball in 5 innings! You always play to the best of your ability when you are on the field because the other team might not be aware the game is over. Quoted:

There's a mercy rule in Iowa. 50 points ahead at the start of the second half, game over. You have to play one play in the second half and then everyone goes home. Surprised me the first time I saw it. Quoted:

Surprised me the first time I saw it. Running clock: Upon completion of the first half of an interscholastic football game at any level of competition or anytime during the second half when a team gains a 35-point differential over its opponent, the clock shall be stopped only when an official’s time-out is taken, a charged time-out is granted, a period ends or a score occurs. Once implemented, the mercy rule remains in effect, even if the differential becomes less than 35 points. |

Todays HS football are putting more points on the board. 60-0 is embarrassing but not that uncommon. He'll, I took a 42-0 loss my junior year and even the subs were kicking our asses. Those dudes might not be as talented, but they want to shine often times more than the starters.
It happens. |

Surprised me the first time I saw it. When you encounter a team that you can really hammer on the best strategy is to let your guys pad their stats if you can, especially if one is on track for a record. It also helps with post season standings if there end up being any ties in rank. |

Surprised me the first time I saw it. It's always been perplexing when I hear in any sport if someone is claiming that score is being run up. You play to win the game(Herm Edwards), don't want the other team scoring, stop them. |
| My daughters HS soccer team beat an inner city team 31-0. This was in one half. HS rules call the game at halftime if one team is up by 10. Coach put in all the subs but the other team wasn’t even trying from the beginning. This is varsity sports. It’s on the other team to put up a fight, not on us to hold back because they are horrible. The subs practice like everyone else and deserve their shot on the field when they get it. |

I don't believe in running up the score, but sometimes, no matter what the coach tries, the score ends up lopsided.
I played Division 1A college football, the top of the top in college football. But our league was weak and we were a smaller school. Somehow we were scheduled to play Auburn, who, at the time, was 3rd in the nation. Their first team was off the field pretty quickly and then their second team was off the field ... Through the second half their coaches were wincing when they scored. Score ended up at 52-0. BTW, we played West Virginia, VA Tech, SC and other decent teams. Eight or ten guys on my team ended up playing pro football, a couple with long, successful careers. But Auburn - wow. They played real football. |
|
What's wrong with "running up the score"? If you're afraid to score more, call the game and go home. Don't insult the other team by letting up on them. In baseball it's typically done to give your pitchers a rest and to turn a lopsided game into a comedy. But I've seen that turn out bad for the winning team. So fuck that, hammer them till they bleed.
Losing should hurt, the more it hurts the harder you'll try to get better and the more you'll want to get even. We're society who seems to admire losers more than winners. Stupid and batshit crazy. |
|
Its the opposing team's job to STOP YOU from scoring points.
Part of getting your ass kicked in a game is to learn the lesson about never giving up, to fight til the end. Mercy rules are for 8-year olds. The dominant team can always take their foot off the gas pedal to show respect for their opponents. The AD and Principal should be ashamed. |
|
I've been on both sides of blowouts. You have to be careful letting off the gas though. I was on a baseball team and we were down 16 runs going into the bottom of the last inning. We ended up coming back and winning with only 1 out recorded. I like Bill Belichick's statement when he was accused of running up the score; "It's the defenses' job to stop my offense, not mine". |

That same shit did not happen the next year in Lincoln. |

Quoted: If this is true, then the coach should have forfeited the game at that moment. And if anybody said anything to him, he should simply have said, "Sorry, but she said she'd fire me if we scored another point. The only way I could prevent that from happening is if I got all of the kids off the field. Talk to her about it if you don't like it. " So, those administrators should know what the state rules are and adhere to them. There are ways to play without running up the score. Football: Run between the tackles, run out of bounds, or victory formation for offensive sets (especially of you have a running clock) and fair catch all kicks/punts... Soccer: make the entire team touch the ball before a shot, shoot from 30-40m out from goal, have defenders play forward (not as effective), play keep away... Basketball: four corners offense, only shoot threes, only shoot with 3 seconds on the clock, only jumpers... |
|
It is up to the losing team to call it quits early, or not. As long as they want to stay in the game then let the kids play hard. On my HS team most varsity played both sides and it was rare to have subs except for the running backs and receivers. So the bench guys were hungry for any chance to get in and test themselves and get noticed. Let everyone try their best or better. Don’t like the results? Rise up and perform better. And yeah, as a team no matter how far ahead whoever is sent in should be expected to execute every play as if it was the most important. Never play lax or sloppy. You work damn hard to develop skills and consistent execution. Never poison that muscle memory. Anyone who has had a big lead, let off the gas and end up losing or in a nail biter finish never lets that happen ever again. |

Quoted: If he just put in a different running back with 1st team Offense or left the starting Defense out there the whole game, then I have a problem. Hint: the kids on the other team know that the other kids aren't giving their best effort - and it's just as insulting, possibly even more infuriating, to realize that you can't even score when they are coasting or put the scrubs in. I would rather be beat 100-0 by the first team than realize I couldn't even score against the scrubs. I've played on football teams that have lost 80+ points to 0, and I have played on football teams that have won by 77 points. I've lost hockey games by 20 points, won hockey games by more than that. My motto always was - crush your opponent. Keep scoring until they can stop you. Even when I was on the receiving end of that mantra. Kids need to toughen up and realize that they'll keep getting their shit pushed in until they get better. It's not up to their opponents to build their self esteem. |

I always fucking hated it when my high school football coach would put in the 2nd team when we were up by a lot. The other team would leave their starters in and they'd run all over 2nd team and ruin our shutout Quoted:

We had 2nd string in before halftime, and each team was freely substituting in the 3rd quarter. The coaches recognized what was going on and tried to get as many people in as possible so they could say they played in the championship game. I wasn't a starter, but I probably played more in that game than the starters. Late in the 3rd quarter, the coach turned to the team and said, "who wants to play defense on this series?". It was one of these ad hoc defenses where the other team finally got a first down. I don't remember if they got another. To handle the ball you had to have had some previous game experience at that position, but the rest of the positions were basically open to anyone in the 4th quarter. |
