http://www.military.com/daily-news/2017/06/13/marine-uber-squad-will-get-suppressors-m27s-socom-gear.html

Looks like @0306 will be creating a Über Squad. Giving every Marine in Uber squad a suppressed M27 with D60 drum mags and Marines with the 240 will have 2 suppressed barrels.

For this effort, every Marine in the Über Squad will be equipped with an M27; a suppressor; and Ops-Core helmets used by U.S. Special Operations Command with built-in hearing protection systems that muffle noises loud enough to damage eardrums, while magnifying other sounds to maintain troops' situational awareness.

He also plans to fit the section of company-level M240 medium machine guns supporting the squad with suppressors, using equipment borrowed from SOCOM to suppress both barrels of the guns.

As a bonus, Marines in the squad will be equipped with Magpul 60-round polymer drum magazines. Military.com reported back in January that various conventional and special operations units were testing the drum in small quantities as a substitute for traditional 30-round magazines.

While the drums offer a lot of portable firepower, there's also a question of weight to consider. Wade said he planned to set the unit up with about 100 of the drums and let each Marine figure out how many he needed to fight effectively.

Marine Corps To Issue Enhanced Combat Helmet to Every Marine

Posted By: Matthew Cox June 12, 2017

Marine Corps Systems Command has awarded a $51 million contract to Gentex Corporation to provide the Enhanced Combat Helmet, or ECH, to every Marine.

Since 2014, Marines have only been issued the ECH when they prepare for deployment. This purchase will enable Marines to use the helmet during training as well, eliminating the need to trade helmets before and after deployments, according to a Marine Corps Systems Command press release.

“Right now, we have three helmets fielded, but the future vision is a single helmet for all operating forces, which greatly simplifies logistics considerations and increases cost savings,” said Nick Pierce, team lead, Body Armor and Load Bearing Equipment.

Also used by the Army and Navy, the ECH provides the most ballistic protection beyond any other Department of Defense helmet, according to the release.

The Army fields the Enhanced Combat Helmet to soldiers for high-threat combat situations such as Iraq and Afghanistan. The ECH is about the same weight as the standard Advanced Combat Helmet but provides increased protection and is capable of stopping rifle rounds and fragmentation, Army officials maintain.

The ECH consists of a ballistic shell, suspension pads and four-point retention system. In addition to those components, a reversible helmet cover, night vision goggle bracket and attachment hardware will be provided for wear.

“The ECH is the helmet of the future Marine,” said Maj. John Draper, ECH project officer. “It’s important for Marines to train with the same gear they will bring into combat.”

Wade is creating an entirely new unit.

The squad will come from Lejeune's 1st Battalion, 6th Marines, though the originating company has yet to be chosen.

I agree with you there. The idea of a 7.62 for all is retarded.

I know a lot of people love to rag on me for my posts, but it does seem more and more every day were getting closer and closer to service wide adoption of the 416.

Uber squad sucks, this new HK boondoggle rifle/machine gun/carbine/dickfer gun sucks, and a CWO5 with a severe case of the good idea fairy sucks.  Fielding items just to be different has worked so well for the Marines in the past, why fight history?

The entire concept of this gun is a retarded step backwards.  HK is just a pimp working their Ho (The Corps).  In the 80s it was the SAS, 90's it was the Seals and SWAT, now its the Corps turn to be pimped out and made to dance for whatever the idiots from Oberndorf desire.

You're not a bad guy, hopefully everyone does adopt the M27 but I highly doubt the piston is the reason why they would go with it.
It has more to do with it being a readily available rifle with all of the upgrades that a M4 needs it just happens to have a piston.

I personally would rather they went with SR-15s but they're not in inventory and readily available with years of combat use like the M27 is

No, the D-60 is superior in every way to the Surefire mags.

You will use the D-60 as the first magazine in your rifle then when it is empty go to the 30 rounders.

What was it the old corps said about the m1 garand when it was introduced?

Mickey mouse gun.

When the AR was introduced?

Made by Mattel!

If the things work and meet the needs and requirements of a Corps currently in combat zones, then they need to be fielded. Who cares why or how they got there; I'd be all boner if they handed me that kinda gear as a young lcpl.

Uber squad is a gay name.

Also, this is just more indication that most military leadership thinks capability is derived from equipment instead of training.

Taking some rando grunts and giving them a shiny new rifle doesn't make them "uber".

While the drums offer a lot of portable firepower, there's also a question of weight to consider. Wade said he planned to set the unit up with about 100 of the drums and let each Marine figure out how many he needed to fight effectively.

"What I think I'm going to find is that, with the ingenuity of the lance corporal, everything is going to find its place," he said. "My assumption is they're ultimately going to be carrying one [drum]."

Although I'd agree that training is very important, and when all other things are equal it matters the most; however equipment also matters. Generational leaps (which this isn't) in quality can make a huge difference.

About time. Like I've been saying, replacing 249's with M27's only makes sense to me if the M27 is issued with >30 rd mags.

And to the Surefire mag pusher, the only benefit I see there is the Surefire 60s would fit in (altered) mag pouches unlike the D60. But one massive problem there. The Surefire 60's aren't dependable for shit. D60 for the win.

Meh, if the USMC was serious about the "suppression" side of the IAR mission (IMHO they never were) they made a lousy choice.  Something like Ultimax or the LWRC entry that fired full-auto fromopen bolt would have be much better.

Uber squad (ghey) seems to disagree.

In all seriousness I probably wouldn't be either. Probably more useful for a DMR role, and if you're laying down SAW levels of suppressive fire, that barrel probably isn't going to maintain DMR accuracy for long

Serious Question: Why do we not outfit all of our military with silencers on their rifles?  Only thing I can think of is cost, but with the .Gov that can't be the deciding factor given the obvious benefits for the soldiers.

If they want to get any useable information from this experiment they need to fill this team with men who have both actual combat experience and solid GT scores.

Inexperienced boots or drooling dumbasses won't get you anything worthwhile.
