Before you all jump all over me and say just get out there and take a class, I'll give some background.
I'll do it in a nutshell. When I was first married, we had a neighbor that had a crazy son that was a cocaine addict and scared my wife a few times and such and such. That's what got me into wanting to be armed. I grew up hunting deer every year, and that was my main firearm useage before this situation. Shooting deer, and sighting in. And a lots of pellet gun shooting as a teenager. So.... Fast forward to being adult, wanting to be armed. After picking up shooting, I shot a lot eventually. Got some instruction from people who got professional instruction, but never took a class myself. I shot a Garand Rifle match and did OK. Those types of things. Learned a lot from people on here, and other places. But never professional instruction. At one time I was shooting several times a week and burnt through a lot of ammo. Rifles and pistols. But, it all came crashing down when I started to have significant health issues. It took a long time but I finally was diagnosed with Lyme Disease. But for all intense purposes, I'm pretty weak and fatigued. But still try and shoot. I think I shot 3x last year. My son is learning how to shoot and a lot of what I do is teaching him and I usually take a pistol, just to keep firing something. But I have very little stamina, I have heart problems that when I push myself cause an arrhythmia and wah wah wah. I just can't jump into a handgun course and participate physically. So.... I want to at least watch some videos to start. And if I ever beat this disease, I'll get more instruction in the field. When I can. I've just about watched every free segment of Thunder Ranch stuff I can see on youtube. And I'm really interested in buying some of his videos. Our state had just recently got CCW and I carry a colt Detective special regularly. When I go out. Which isn't a lot. And it's basically the handgun I've been shooting last year and this year. However, I suck at shooting it accurately compared to all the other pistols I own, which are much bigger and not the best for carrying. I do have Hipower, but it will require work before I can carry it and I've been trying to figure out if I should get the work done, or get a different platform. Anyways...... That wasn't very much of a nutshell, but I thought I'd give you some background, so you can understand why I'm asking what I'm asking. So the question is basically, what do some of your recommend as a good training video. I see that the NRA is putting out the PDN, and I've been debating on buying and signing up for that. And like I said, I'm interested in the Thunder Ranch stuff, as I like his style and I don't see myself as being very tactical of course. He seems to teach to just average Joes type of a thing. At least from what I can tell. Input is greatly welcomed. I don't know of what else might be out there. My motivation is to learn to be the safest and most proficient shooter I can be for my family, despite my limitations. Because even though I'm pretty weak, I'm still a whole lot stronger than my wife. Even if it's for short bursts. And she is not motivated to shoot and learn how to shoot proficiently. Thank you for your help. |

What part of WI are you in? If need be training can be structured around your needs. Videos from the Panteao series have mostly good places to start. But how do you know if you're doing it correct, or fine tune to make it better?
West or east, I have a couple options to help if interested. |
I guess I should've put that in my original post. A question if there are instructors that do instruction for special needs people.
My range session are usually like an hour and a half with most of it sitting down. Hhehehee. I'll sit with my son and daughter while they are shooting to help. And when I do I'll take some shots with my pistol. I usually have energy enough to fire at least 50 rounds with a centerfire and some with a .22. Anyways.... Yeah, knowing if I'm performing properly is good. However, something I can start learning in my home is good too. I'm waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay south east. Racine county, northern part, right by the lake. |

Yeah, that would be great!! Maybe he can teach my kids too. And possibly wife. If she wants.
Still would like to hear about any videos if anyone has any thoughts. I might just get a Thunder Ranch video or two. Hmmmm...... Or check out these other ones mentioned. I would've thought people would have some kind of opinion on the Personal Defense Network with Rob Pincus at the NRA. |

We work with a lady that has rheumatoid arthritis. She suffers from a hand deformation and grip strength issues. After some private sessions with her and her husband, she has chosen to enroll in full classes. I make sure that the guy that worked with her privately is on the range for the classes.
If you find the right instructor you and your family would benefit from some lessons built around your situation. You can build your skills additionally with videos. You may want to find an instructor first, ask him what vids he would recommned and then let the vids be a part of the process. If you are working off his recommendation, you can operate from a common ground using the vids as a reference. Of course, dry fire (in a proper location) in your home helps also. |
