Went to visit some family around Christmas time, and helped my step-father choose/purchase a new pistol.  Part of the agreement I made with him was that he had to attend a quality training course.  He has already attended a local safety class, and the feedback was that the instructor was clueless, and gave bad info (such as, if someone is breaking in, shoot them and then drag their body into the house prior to calling the cops. ).  My step-father actually walked out of the class before it was over.

He has decided that not only is he going to attend a course, he wants to have me and my step-brother come along.  So there will be three of us with varying levels of ability; (I CCW, and shoot regularly, step-father shoots .22lr pistols occasionally, and step-brother probably hasn't shot a firearm in 10+ years).

So I need a recommendation for a training course that can appeal to all of us.  I am looking for basic handling, safety, equipment, marksmanship as well as a focus on defensive/CCW use as well.  Location isn't important, but if it was somewhere near the west coast that would be best.

Suggestions?

Check out Bruce Gray at Gray Guns.  Take his Practical Fundamentals course.  No matter what your skill level, you'll get a lot out of it.

We have Bruce and some of his other trainers come out every spring for a class at our club here in MA, and we're always booked to capacity.  Students range from absolute beginners to experienced competition shooters and LEO's, including decorated SWAT Team members, and everybody leaves a better shooter than they showed up as.

I know he has the class here in MA in May, and he regularly teaches in CA and FL.  He sometimes has a class at his place in Spray, OR, but I'm not sure what's planned for there yet.

I've trained with Bruce, Colt Defense, S&W, Mike Rayburn, some local SRT Team members who instruct on the side, and a lot of work related training classes.  All of them put on excellent, informative, well structured courses, and would train with all of them again.  But for the varying skill levels you describe, I would absolutely recommend Bruce's Practical Fundamentals class.  There's a writeup on his site specifically about the class here:

I went to a Firearms Academy of Seattle class last fall and it was run very well. They cater to all levels of skill and do a good job of making sure everyone is safe. I plan on going back this fall for the Close Quarters Carbine class.
