I may be biting off more than I can chew, but I'm wondering if anyone can tell me about Front Sight and Dr. Ignatius Piazza. I spent a little time on Google, and nearly everything I read seemed to be generated by Front Sight.
Has anyone dropped the cash to train there, or more to the point, has anyone taken advantage of his gun/training package? I hate to jump to conclusions, so if anyone has any experience, good or bad, I'd like to hear about them. |

I took the 4 day defensive handgun course and I liked it. I got to go for free because a friend took me but you can find certificates on e-bay for about $100. If you're planning to travel to NV then I would recommend it. We can all use a little more training.
We did a lots dry firing and clearing malfunctions. We shot from different distances. There was a night shoot and they have a mock house (to simulate clearing a house). |

4 Day Rifle checking in. Used a certificate bought on eBay, redeemable for a first time free class. I liked the facility, liked the instructors, spent alot of time shooting ( although to be fair I would have liked to have shot more ). I'd go back again if I could do it on the cheap. My class was in March; weather was mostly cool with a couple of warm days.
I wouldn't worry too much about the good Doctor. They mention him in the introductory lectures but he didn't make an appearance ( I understand that he rarely does ). If you've ever looked into Scientology you will see some parallels in their teaching techniques, mostly in the terminology. The S word is NEVER mentioned by staff. Not a fan of that "religion" but Front Sight was a nice "gun vacation". |

I believe that offer has been hashed out in another thread that I'm too lazy to find right now. |

I took 4-day Handgun in October 2007 with my father & brother using some eBay certificates. We were prepared for it to be like one of those "stay at our resort for free & listen to our sales pitch" places. It wasn't. There was only one lunch lecture discussing various memberships, and it was not high pressure. Nobody was trying to plug Scientology, sell Amway, hawk Cutco knives, or get me to give them my bank account number to help a deposed Nigerian king.
My free time is often very limited, and maximizing its utility is very important. In no way do I feel it was wasted at Front Sight, nor did my father or brother who attended with me. FS carries some stigma due to past business issues, but the training made us better and safer shooters. We bought memberships recently when a very good deal came around, since my brother lives in Vegas. There was an issue on our end regarding one of the memberships, and Dr. Piazza himself spoke with my father on the phone about it. He was courteous and professional, and went out of his way to take care of us. I just upgraded to Diamond membership for far less than the advertized price. (Didn't get the Rolex or free guns, but that's OK. I can make do with my own watches & guns) Lots of folks who have never been there will dismiss it as "wannabe training." Maybe that hard focus on the front sight, trigger press, and follow-through are poseur skills, but I'll use them anyway - that's what FS taught us. They teach Weaver stance and expect you to at least try it out before reverting to iso. No one school has all the answers, and I don't believe in limiting to one facility for all my training. Until able to attend other places, I have the Thunder Ranch and Magpul DVDs to watch. Some people don't like Piazza, some don't like Gabe Suarez, and others don't like James Yeager - the phenomenon isn't limited to Front Sight. FS seems to be an easy target due to its size and more aggressive self-promotion. I have no problem with advertizing and trying to hit a wide audience, but that's my bias from working in the radio/communications industry. ETA: An OB/GYN at one of my hospitals was chatting the other day about his Springfield XD and a training class he took. He did the "free gun" and training package, and loved it. Even if it seems somewhat overpriced to those of us who scavenge the EE for amazing deals, realize this: That doc was not a "gun guy" beforehand. Now he owns a gun and has training in safety and fundamentals. He wants to get his wife a gun & send her to training. I can't see how having another happy & safe American gunowner is a bad thing - we need all the allies we can get. |
