USPSA at ATTAC 7-28-12
By 30. July 2012 13:40
Saturday I decided to go to the USPSA match at ATTAC www.ATTAC-FL.com in St. Augustine. It was a HOT day but the stages were already set up and everyone on my squad was pretty good about helping out where needed. Tanner was my RO and he was a pretty fast shooter for Production. In fact he came in First in Production class.

We started out on COF 5 My accuracy wasn't great but it was ok. After shooting the targets through the center port I went left. I made a vital mistake when going to the right target by not reloading on the way there. I went to slide lock which cost me vital time on a reload.

Next we went to COF 1 I did ok on this one. But again I forgot to reload on the move once. Which again cost me time. Accuracy on this one was pretty good though. It's fun having things like doors and swinging targets that can trip people up and get them out of their OODA loop.

COF 2 Accuracy wasn't horrible but it wasn't great. And once again went to slide lock instead of reloading when I could have. I see a pattern forming. Starting with both toes on the fault line was also different because it stopped you from getting your leg back for a good launch. And of course shooting steel poppers is always fun.

COF 3 Did really well had my reloads down where I wanted them and then I totally bypassed a small steel popper and left it behind. But overall not too bad. I also got two a zone hits on the swinger.

COF 4 Finally stuck with my stage plan on this one though I probably could have avoided a reload had I planned things a bit differently. Other than that I feel pretty good about the stage ran it fast

on stage 2 of the idpa, they did not catch the procedural for the reloading out of cover. Also,,how come no cover garments?

There was some discussion on that.  I couldn't remember where exactly the mag came out I just remembered I had finished it behind cover.  Obviously when I looked at it later I saw the mag came out before I was necessarily covered behind the barrel  I wasn't aware you couldn't do a tac load when moving and not able to engage the other targets.  Seems like s strange thing to penalize for.

Cover garments are optional for a few months here in Florida since the heat index gets up into the 100's Most of the rest of the year they are required.

All reloads must start and end behind cover, if cover is availble is the general rule. I am not here to critique you, but you seem to like to do tact and reloads with retention. Most of the time it faster to just do a slide lock reload. a tact reload for the adverage person is 3-4 seconds while a slide lock reload is 1.5 -2 seconds.

i could never figure out the lack of cover garment in hot weather. All one has to do is put it on when one comes up to shoot, and take it off afterwards.

Critique away it's how we learn.  The first tac reload was mandatory and if I had the option I would have done so while taking a knee so I wouldn't have to tac load then take a knee then engage.

The second one was because I was moving but not shooting or doing anything else.  I'll avoid breaking the rules in the future but if I'm moving behind cover and not doing anything else and I've used half my rounds it seems 1 more tactically sound to top off my gun before reengaging 2 save time from walking and doing nothing then coming out from cover and engaging for 3-5 rounds then having to seek cover, reload, re-engage.  And I think on that second stage it saved me more overall time.  However I now know it's against the rules.

In this video I did a tac reload while moving behind cover for two reasons. 1. Because of the reasons stated above.  2. Because I didn't want to run out of rounds while hitting the popper and then try to engage the popper and miss my opportunity.  Would you agree or disagree?
In this video would you agree with the Tac-Reload?

In the USPSA match video do you believe I should have waited for slide lock there or were you only referring to the IDPA video?

Does anyone else want to post video's?  Enter the discussion?

If i recall corectly, a stage can not force a R +R reload on the clock so the stage would be illegal if i am correct. on the second, it depends on how long the cover is and how fast can do a r+r reload. For me i find it always faster to run past the cover than slowing down to do a r+r reload. But thats jut me.

You were correct to do the R+R in that stage.  Truthfully many would just throw one extra down range and do a slide lock reload. this in theory would be round dumping, but in my 6 year of IDPa in both local and state matches, i have never seen it called.

In USPSA one trys to never run the gun to slide lock. that why a lot of guns are fixed not to hold the slide open on last shot.   In theory in the div i shoot, which is production, one reloads when ever moving to a new shooting spot. thats why one needs a lot of mags.

Sure.  The tac-load in IDPA has very limited usefulness in my opinion.  Even if you get pretty good at it, it's usually not the way to go.  If you've got a long distance to go behind cover and at the end, you've got some targets that you're going to have to learn out pretty far to hit - it may be worth it.  Having a good concealment garment that you can just drop the mag into helps a lot.

Here's my most recent pistol match video.  Plenty of mistakes, but it worked out ok.

This is the only video I have of a outdoor match. I shot pretty well in that match, I ended up placing 8th (which is pretty good for me). The only real mistake I had was dropping my mag (1:45), you were suppose to do a tac load between the target arrays and I am just so use to letting the mag hit the deck but I did remember to stow it before I shot.

The video is kinda shaky at the beginning, so I cut the worst stuff out. the last 2 stages were better.

http://shootspsa.org/ The match was Dec. 17th 2011, the scores are under match results.

I also never tac load, unless the stage calls for it, and most of the time if they give me a choice of shooting on the move vs running to cover and engaging the targets, I will usually just hall as# to that cover and engage the targets. My theory is that you can either shoot fast, or move fast not both (at least at my skill level).

3rd COF I did ok, My time could have been better I was swinging the gun instead of acquiring the target and putting the gun on target which slowed me down.  The 3 shots on each target was required.

4th COF I tried to go too fast on the far targets.  My accuracy suffered.

5th COF wasn't bad the Tac Reload was required.  My shots on the move were both good hits.

1st COF Time was ok nothing spectacular.  I hesitated going from one side of the window to the other because I wanted to reload on the way there.

2nd COF I made a lot of mistakes.  3 hits were required on each paper but I went for four on the first paper.  I should have shot faster for the distance and not let the swinger dictate so much.

Latest local IDPA match.  Fumbled racking the slide on the 2nd stage we shot and had to take a makeup shot on the last stage which ended up costing me about 3 seconds.  It all worked out in the end though.

First Coast IDPA 9-1-12

First COF I shot was COF 2 You had to start from the start line and upon hearing the buzzer draw your gun and take the first target while moving towards cover.  Then go to the left side of the barricade and engage the target directly in front of you.  Then while moving to the set of barrels take the next available target on the move.  From the barrel engage the next available target while using cover.  Then while moving engage the targets while walking towards the phone.  Kneel and pick up the phone and dial 911.  I got a reshoot on this stage because from one of the positions there was no way to see the -0 because the targets kept moving when people were pasting.

COF 3 Was a limited Vickers stage.  You started with your Pistol loaded to 6 rounds with the pistol in a box.  Then sit down facing up range legs fully extended hands behind your head fingers interlaced.  Upon the sound of the buzzer you were to run to the door, Open it, see the threat, and then retrieve your gun.  Then engage the 6 steel plates with your six rounds.  Run through the door, move the non threat out of the way, punch the target down with your empty handgun, Pick up the knife and stab the target.  Then run to the barrel and pick up the revolver loaded with one round and shoot the steel plate.  Overall I kinda messed up on this stage.  I just got this M&P and I forgot that at that range I needed to cover the target with the green dot.  So I missed 3 of the 6 plates not too good.

COF 4 Start holding a doll in your left hand.  Upon buzzer draw and shoot one handed the two targets in front of you in tactical sequence.  Then run to table for cover where you can put the doll down.  Then shoot targets in tactical priority.  I found most people just set the doll on top of the table and shot around it or over it.  Since I have a daughter about the same size I had no plan of putting my daughter in front of me.  I tucked her under me.  and told her to stay down.  Simply setting down a squirming child in a gunfight may not be the best idea especially if she may freak out and run So I tucked her under to hopefully control her and keep her in a safe spot.

COF 5 Facing two targets upon buzzer you were to move backwards and shoot the two targets in tactical sequence with two to the body one to the head.  Then using the barrel as cover engage the rest of the targets as you pie from cover.  Shooting the steel activated the swinger.  I did ok here and had two -1's in the swinger.

COF 1

Start sitting at the table and dial 911 then draw your pistol and shoot the targets in tactical sequence.  Then getting up from the table shoot the far target on the move.  Moving to the barrels for cover shoot targets as you see them from cover.  I did ok on this one as well.  Most people took too much time trying to mess with the phone to dial 911 you can draw and dial at the same time.  Also I started with the left side target which meant I ended on the left side target which made my transition to moving and shooting smoother.

Overall I got 2nd place in unclassified SSP and 9th overall.  Not too bad for the amount of shooters out there.  Next month is a classifier so I'll no longer be shooting unclassified.  We'll see how that goes.

SEPSA 9-8-12 USPSA

The first Stage we shot was Stage 3.  Stage 3 you started inside the fault lines heels on marks upon the buzzer engage all targets from within the fault line.  I started by shooting the 4 IPSC targets and then moved to the door while reloading..  For some reason I pulled on the door instead of pushing.  I have no idea why because I had tried the door in the walk through.  Anyway engaged the targets through the door. I then turned and while reloading headed to the next port where there were at least three targets and one off to the left that I took from that positiong.  Then while reloading I walked to the last position at the end of the fault line.  Took the last targets.  While I had all A zone hits I shot this one kinda slow.  I could have hustled in a few more places and shot a little faster.

Stage 4 start on with your toes on the marks on either the left or right side.  Upon buzzer engage targets from within fault line.  So the buzzer goes off and I take a big step back while drawing.  I engaged the steel first to get them out of the way and I figured if I had to do an early reload I wanted to do it where I could easily transition back to the left side.  After engaging the paper on the right side I noticed one of my hits went into the black of the target which represents hard cover.  I reloaded while moving to the left side. I engaged the paper targets first and worked my way back to the steel.  After shooting the steel I transitioned back to the target on the right and made up my miss.  No idea whether it was worth the time or not.

Stage 5 Start with toes on fault lines hands relaxed at sides upon buzzer engage targets from within fault lines.  We started a good ways from the targets.  I sprinted to a position where I could start engaging the steel.  On the last steel I started to walk while engaging.  I then stopped for the far papers on the left.  Reloaded and moved on to the next set of targets in the center.  I shot some of these a little too slow.  My pace was off.  I shot the clear targets at the same speed as the targets with hard cover and no shoots.  I then transitioned to the right while reloading and shot the close targets fairly fast then engaged the target on the right and then swung left and even though I saw the holes in the target I still reengaged it.  Oh well I'd rather over shoot than undershoot.

Stage 1 Start in the box engage targets from within the fault line.  This stage seemed to me to be a course designed to mess with the production guys.  You had a choice to reload more often than necessary or only have one in the pipe when reloading meaning no make up shots.  I got hung up on the end when I missed the last plate and ran out of rounds I had to reload which cost me valuable time.  Other than that I shot it ok.  Still could have shot it faster.

Stage 2 start outside the box facing up range with hands above shoulders pistol on table unloaded.  I bombed this stage.  I had a hesitation when I went to reload and stopped the reload and still should have reloaded and once again got to the other end and on the next to last target I went to slide lock meaning I had to reload for only one piece of steel. It Sucked.

My friend/co worker Mason decided to come to the match as well.  This was his first pistol match, though he usually shoots a rifle match with me called FDCC.

Stage 1: Started off with a classifier stage.  Stand in box and engage the two steels and two paper targets.  Then reload and move to the other side and shoot two steels and two paper.
I did ok on this one with a decent time and accuracy.  I felt like I could have shot it a bit faster but I didn't want to make any mistakes.
Mason forgot to reload before switching sides and it cost him big time.  after the penalties for all the targets he pretty much zero'd out the stage.  Which

Stage 2: Start in the box and engage all steel from the box. Stay within fault lines to shoot.
Some of the limited guys were able to shoot all the targets from the box and didn't have to move at all but they had to either take c zone hits or get really close to shooting the barrel Since I was running production I figured I'd take the outer paper targets and try and get the a-zone hits while reloading and moving.  However I tottally messed up on one of the inner targets and just passed it without shooting it.  Then reloaded and took the next couple of targets.  Brain fart really killed me on this one.

Stage 3: Handgun on the G of the table shooter engage's the four paper targets from behind the table and then moves to the fault lines for the rest of the targets.
I started off fairly strong moved to the left side of the fault lines and shot the steel and two papers.  They said I had a miss on the target closest to me. I then reloaded on the move and ran through the small wall maze to engage the last targets.  I didn't think to run around the walls and go back into the fault line like I saw some of the other guys doing later.  When my friend Mason saw this he said "How the heck can he do that?" I replied that you only had to shoot within the fault lines you didn't have to stay within them otherwise.  Would have saved a second or two on the stage.

Stage 4: Start within the box. Do not engage targets until you are within the fault lines.  I started off strong with the plate rack on this one and meant to move right first.  Instead I moved left.  I then shot the paper target first when I had planned to hit the steel popper and then engage the paper and then back to the paper target on the popper.  Then moved and reloaded and shot the targets there.

Stage 5: Start on either side outside the fault lines with toes on marks.  Move within fault line and engage targets as you see fit.  I did ok here I missed a few on the Texas Star but had I made sure to reload before running out of ammo.  Then took a few steels on the move reloaded and shot the paper then the back three steels.  All in all I had some major brain farts that cost me quite a bit.

Overall I was 5th in production out of 27 and something like 12th or 13th overall out of 54.  However something has changed in the scores since I last checked and I got bumped down to 6th in production.  I'm not sure how that happened.  Maybe someone had a wrong scoring or was never entered.
Mason came in 9th in Limited Minor shooting his Glock 34

IDPA classifier Expert.  I was pretty happy to qualify Expert at my first qualifier.  I used my M&P 9mm Pro model. With a Bladetech Holster and Double mage pouch that came with my Tan M&P

I started by shooting stage 2.  My first string shooting forward on the move  I did ok.  Probably could've driven the gun a little better and done a few things a little faster.  I shot faster on the way back and I believe I had better hits.  El presidente I shot in 9.01 which isn't bad but could be done faster.  The one handed I did in 5.50  again not bad but one handed deff slows you down.

I then moved to stage 3 of the classifier.  My tack reloads were ok but not as fast as I'd like so I'll have to practice those more.  My times were ok but I had two total misses on one target which set me back quite a bit also when moving forward to the second set of barrels I had a brain fart and almost forgot to take a knee before shooting.  My groups were not where they should be, overall I need to work on my 20 yard pistol shooting a good bit more.

Stage 1 I feel was my best stage.  We started off with the two headshots on each target.  Most people missed a few there and I was happy that I made all my hits.  I was a bit slow at 6.29 But I was more concerned with hits there.  Next I did the Failure Drills.  My times were 2.41, 2.47 and 2.11 I think the third one I decided to kick it up a notch because I had been making all my hits.  Next the one handed left hand is where I believe I made most of my -1's  Left handed I still have some bad habits.  The turn shot 1-1-1 reload shot 1-1-1 was pretty decent though I wasn't as fast on my reload as I'd like but I did ok.  All in all I was only -4 on this stage and had decent times.

A shooter is deemed loaded and may move from a position of cover ONLY when the fresh magazine is FULLY SEATED and the slide is fully forward or revolver cylinder is closed.

Doesn't say anything about a magazine being in a carrier from what I can see.  If that's what you're talking about.  My understanding is that you have to have a round in chamber and magazine in the gun.  But no penalty was called.

And yeah if I had the same PD as the other stages I'd be a lot closer to Master I shot too fast and didn't take enough time with those long shots..  Honestly if I'd set up the classifier and practiced it a couple times like some do I'm sure I'd have done better.  But there's always next time.  Actually I'm hoping to hit a major match or so before worrying about that.

I don't have too much to show on this one, but here is one short stage from our IDPA match yesterday at Phillipsburg Pistol Club in NJ.  Oh as a side note, I really hate Jersey's mag restriction.  I had to buy a few 15rnders to stay legal.  But they do two matches a month there so it's worth it.

We had 8 stages, but I was only able to video one.  My shooting buddy bailed on me and I didn't want to bother the other shooters by asking each stage to be videoed.  I should have, though.  I could have used the debrief footage.  I hadn't shot in a couple of months and it was obvious.

This is one of the stages.  Gun is at slidelock on the counter with three loaded mags in the box.  At the buzzer have to load weapon and engage the targets.  Five targets with one non-threat by the last one.  As you can see, I try to do the reload off the belt where there are no mags.  Habits are hard to break!  M&P9 full sized with APEX DCAEK kit installed, Warren Tactical Sevigny sights.  SSP EX though it doesn't look like it!

I shot it almost clean.  All zeros with the exception of the last target with the non-threat in front.  After the reload I pulled my shot and JUST barely missed the top of the NT's head.  I actually nicked it, but it didn't make it to the perforated mark, so I was GTG.  Was a -3, though.  I had taken too long to decide to take a third shot so I just let it go.  Ah well.

9/21 overall.  3/3 in the SSP EX  A lot of the guys in EX or MA are REALLY freaking good, though.  I'd rather be at the bottom clawing to get better than sitting at the top of a lower class.

First five targets were clean.  The last one after the reload I pulled a shot when shooting the head and it went into the -3, but it BARELY missed the non-threat.  It literally nicked the top part of the target in the non-scoring area.  If you see the vid at the very end after I shoot I kind of get on my toes to peak past the NT to make sure I did hit in a scored section of the threat.  Last one went into the head.

I went to Blue Ridge Cherry Valley here in PA on Sunday and did much better, though I lost 6 positions overall (6 out of 44 to about 12 out of 44) due to one target on one stage.  FTN on a weak hand shot.

This is a video of the match made by a different (and better) shooter.  It was a fun match!

CASA USPSA 11/4/12

Ended up HOA out of 42 shooters and won 3 of the 5 stages shooting Limited Minor. Stages 1-3 are on the video.

Stage 1 - Threw one over the 5th target and had to make it up - I should have taken a step back as I was very close to the 180. Ended up winning the stage, but shot 8 C's and 1 D.

Stage 2 - Went well and fast, 3 C's.

Stage 3 - One of my better stages all year. 35 pieces of steel - one miss on the star, one miss on the small poppers and 2 misses on the last plate rack.

This post is a couple weeks late, but better late than never.  I had the chance to shoot with a couple of my friends which was a lot of fun.  These video's are from the USPSA match at ATTAC in St. Augustine.

Overall I need to work on being more aggressive with my reloads, and sticking to my stage plan.

Stage 3: I was doing ok until I went the third array of targets and started from the left instead of shooting the steel plate down so I could come back and hit the paper.  Then on the Plate rack I missed a one which meant when I got to the paper I only got one hit.  I decided to take the miss instead of doing a reload though I'm not sure if it worked out better that way or not.

Stage 4: I actually did pretty good on this stage I took first, but I'm wondering if some people were sandbagging because it was a classifier.  Not much to say about the stage I probably could have done my reloads faster.

Stage 5: I had a miss on this stage.  The RO said he saw my foot slipping as the shot broke so I guess that could be the reason. Also as I got to the far right corner I put the front sight in the target however I wasn't looking through the back sight and had to come back and make up a shot on it.  Other than that I did ok on this stage.

Stage 1:  With the targets set up the way they were I Planned to shoot the two papers to the far right skipping one and coming back to it after the star and then the three to the far left.  I got frustrated at the star and after shooting it I totally forgot the third paper.  Which is why when I went to the last array I shot it from the side.  They said the hits on target didn't count but I avoided an FTE.

Stage 2: I did ok on this but on the second array of targets I went to I had a miss which I knew would cause for a reload.  So as I transitioned to the second set of targets I went ahead and did a reload.  But I would have been a bit faster on this stage if I had shot that second array without a miss.

Other than that I did ok on this stage.

on the Star did you notice that one of the plates looked like it fell of by itself? Also, I was told by more than a few people that if one does not hit the plate in three shots to let it go. the miss is less than  keep trying to hit it.

I need to move to Florida. looks like there is shooting every weekend and good weather to boot

If you listen carefully it hits the plate. but it falls after.

and yeah you can literally shoot every weekend here.  in fact there are matches Saturdays and Sundays.  If you're willing to drive within an hour or two of jax you have a wide variety of shoots available to you.

This was my first time making it out to SAPSA for a USPSA shoot. I've been to SEPSA and ATTAC before but I've just never worked it out to go to the FOP for SAPSA. I had a good time. The match went fast and there were some good stages. I got 16th overall and 6th in Production.
Stage 5: I didn't get this stage on video but it wasn't anything exciting.  I took 6th on the stage.  I ran it kinda slow but made good hits.

Stage 1: I did so so on this stage.  I shot with a fair degree of accuracy, but my time wasn't fast enough to really take me up a notch.  I hesisitated in a few spots and should have moved a little faster.

Stage 2: I'm really happy with how that stage turned out for me. I took 2nd place and beat one of the Production Master Class shooters that was at the match.  I'd say the thing I could have done better was shoot faster at the end.

Stage 3: Was a classifier stage.  I'd say my time was good but I had a miss which cost me dearly.

Stage 4: Again OK I was very accurate on this stage but took too much time

You can only embed when you are a member.  For whatever reason.  It's the only reason I paid for a membership.

Some IDPA action from last week. I'm still a relatively new shooter, so yes I'm not that fast a lot of the time.

I'll have to look up how to embed, I don't know how!

Y'all hittin' New Holland this wknd?  I'm thinking about heading down to try out my new CZ.  I usually shoot and M&P in SSP, so the hammer down start with the CZ will be a little different.

New pistol, new mags, new ammo, haven't shot since Oct.  Should be embarrassingly fun!

Yep - we will be there.

shot USPSA at LP today fun match but it was a special classifier match so more static stages, only 2 stages with real movement.

Based on talking to Mark and Annette tomorrow should be a good match.

I love those CZs if I ever went back to a hammer fired gun it would be a CZ. also if you have a safety model instead of a decocker you can shoot  ESP and not have to deal with the DA first shot.

OK, I will join in and put forward a video of questionable competition skills.

Overall very slow, But at least I got all A's, trouble finding and then getting onto the first target inside the port , then on the final paper and steel it was just plain UGLY. lost the front sight and took a long time to find it again.

But then again,it was just a club shoot and therefore a time to relax and make mistakes
