How many mags does one need for IDPA? I read something in the rulebook that strings of fire are limited at 18 rounds. Does that mean you'll never need more than 18 rounds at once? Are three 1911 mags enough?

You only really need three. For 1911 you could use 4 mags, and use the forth as a barney mag to top off.
You can only have 2 mags on your belt and one in the gun during a course of fire. Although more mags in your bag do help on multi string stages.

Yote is correct. Also a wheel gunner can have three speed loaders on your hip. Two in front of the holster and one behind.

It’s would be “nice” to have a couple of spar magazines for the "Classifier" just to keep things moving or a buddy to help load them.
