I am going to start shooting high power and am planning to buy a WOA upper but have a few questions.

There are a couple of options on the Service Rifle Upper that I need some guidance on.

1) What is the difference between .052", .062", or .072" NM front sight post and which would be best for someone getting into the sport?
2) What are the benefits of a pinned rear sight base and is it worth the extra $55?
3) What is the difference between the pre and post ban models?

Any other recommendations would be greatly appreciated.  Thank you in advance for your help.

1)  This is the width of the front sight post.  Honestly you need to shoot them all to decide which one is best for you.  I shoot a 72, my travel partner shoots a 82, and his neighbor shoots a 62.  Kind of like, how do you like your steak cooked.

2)  I think the pinned option is a good choice.  It makes sure the rear sight travels straight up as you add elevation.  Take a standard A2 and you will notice that you can twist it left and right.   This may or may not allow the rear sight to move to one side as elevation is added.  With it being pinned, you don't have to worry about it.

3)  A preban will have a flash hider and the post ban will not.

#1 and #3 are just personal choices.  If you choose to do #2, there is nothing about your equipment that could be improved on (disregarding the trigger).

I just ordered and received a new WOA upper in December.  I went with a preban, .072 front sight, 1/4 x 1/4 min, and added the pinned option.

Good luck.

The front sight widths are a personal preference. Some guys with good eyes like the narrow .052 while others like the wider sight.

The pinned rear sight keeps the rear from twisting that little bit that all AR rear sights do. I think it is worth the money. It makes the rear aperture stay in line as you adjust and bump the sight.

The pre ban/post ban is the flash hider. Post ban is just a plain barrel while pre ban has a flash hider.

I love my .052" one, its so much easier to see targets with.

The width of the front sight post has to do with its relative width vs. the aiming black.  The .052 will be very nealry the same size as a the aiming black, so if your eyes are sharp, you csan just line it up with the black and break the shot.  Some (like myself of rexample)  prefer some "real estate" that I can center up the aiming black with (have a little post on either side of the black).

Pinned sights help to remove one more variable in your sight picture, or at least that's the idea.  Probably worth the money, but not an earth shattering difference.

Pre or post ban refers to the flash hider.  Some like it to protect the crown.  It makes no functional difference.

The WOA folks are great to speak with too, don't hesitate.

You might give John a call if you still have questions. I have one of John's match uppers for my daughter, awesome rig.

If you are serious about your scores, then the pinned sights are worth the trouble.
Pre and post ban makes little difference in group size performance. There are some who would argue that the flash and jump are reduced, but cleaning is easier without anything on the muzzle.

The upgraded bbl isn't necessary on the first rig till your scores and experience climb the ladder. When you are ready to go after the high masters, having the bbl upgraded won't be a question in your own mind.
John's regular bbls are completely capable of winning in the right hands, and the upgrade won't win in the wrong hands.

Thank you everyone for your responses.  They all are very helpful.

I will give John a call before I order.

I took a high power clinic over the weekend to get a feel for it and really enjoyed it.  I was shooting a bolt gun but would like to get into the Service Rifle category.

I am definitely excited.

Thanks again.
