The "team" is getting back together again and heading to Perry this summer. In the past we always shot CMP week. This time we are at least thinking about NRA week, shooting Service RIfle.
To those who have been to both, compare and contrast. None of us are terribly serious about the sport, we do it for fun, and this is our vacation. No leg points, no master class, just going out and enjoying ourselves. We do like to have some down time to kick back and relax. In the past we would shoot the P100, the NTI, and the Garand Match. Thursday was a trip to Put-in-Bay to enjoy the "cultural" activities. Thanks |

I have attended both weeks over the past 13 years. The NRA matches are a little more laid back as far as atmosphere is concerned. There are less shooters (around 500 as opposed to over 1000) so getting on and off the range, parking, etc. is less of a hassle. Despite more rounds fired per day, you will be off the range earlier during NRA week This is a product of the smaller number of shooters necessitating a smaller number of relays. This will leave you more time to unwind, clean up and head out for something to eat.
There are several drawbacks to be aware of. The cost of sahooting the NRA matches is a little higher. You can't pick and choose the matches, you have to shoot the whole aggregate which costs about $240. If you decide to shoot the team match it wil be around $80 more. By the time NRA week rolls around alot of the stuff on commercial row is sold out (bullets, powder, primers). Some of the vendors are packed up and gone by mid-week so if you need something get to Commercial Row early in the week. You really can't go wrong either way. CMP week is a little more intense with larger numbers and many more shooters on a mission for leg points, President's 100, and team honors. The NRA matches are less strenuous and a little more on the laid-back side. Have fun. Ron Lupinacci |

FWIW, I've shot in both CMP and NRA week at Camp Perry every year since '92. There are always a fair amount of junior shooters during CMP week. I make it a point to support my state team in that regard however possible. With the addition of the CMP games matches there are certainly other matches I could shoot but at a minimum I shoot the NTI, P100, and NTT. Since they've upgraded the huts electrically at Camp Perry one can now use small appliances such as window AC, small refrigerators, etc. Except for one year I always stayed in the huts. They are liveable if you get one without a leaky roof. The down side is you have to use the community head. Considering the quality of the accomodations, I've never considered the price of the huts fair, but the alternative involves some fairly expensive condos that you have to know somebody to get a line onto one. I like to shoot the CMP games matches, and more recently the Springfield M1A match, but I've been to Cedar Point a few times also. The charter fishing boats in Port Clinton are a fun excursion, you don't need any tackle but you'll have to buy some bait. NRA week is a bit less hectic due to fewer numbers of shooters, and less pit changes. The NRA matches fire three of the four stages of an 800agg match each of four days, for a total of 240 shots (plus sighters) and three 800 aggregates. Each stage is an actual match and scored accordingly with class winners and placers given award points. The Enlisted mens/Rumbold match the day before the first day of NRA week is a popular team match for NRA week competitiors for the purposes of confirming "Camp Perry zeros" on your rifle. All in all I enjoy mostly to comraderie with the many other shooters that I only meet up with once a year. There's lots to do and don't forget the award ceremonies. If you've never been it's worth doing. JMHO, 7zero1. |

I went this past summer to the NRA matches but only competed in one match. I didn't have to shoot in any more but would really like to. This year I hope to shoot match 532 the any sights 1000 yd and again in the Wimbledon, and maybe not be nervous about the fact that there weren't alot of other people there shooting a 308. I am hoping to find someone who has a team or wants to put one together to shoot in the HerrickTrophy Team match.
I didn't get to see many vendors and the place was not busy at all, but I guess I only really want to go up to shoot a long range match, or maybe three. |
