I'm considering a dedicated .22 AR upper for training, which I can put on my regular highpower lower. Preferably a 20" A2 or A4 config. I'd rather not use a conversion on my .223 upper.

Anyone have direct experience with .22 uppers?  Please post your input and recommendations based on price, reliability, ammo preferences, accuracy, overall quality etc.

I have a dpms, it is good but discontinued and no factory support or parts. 10 round mags are all that is available and they are very difficult to find.

I have a velocity arms .22 dedicated upped.  It was $350 new and comes with a Black Dog Machine magazine.  The magazines are probably the best and are readily available.

I have a Spikes Tactical on order but they are probably the best .22 upper going but are in demand so there is a wait to get them.  The also use the Black Dog magazines.

I have the CLE upper.  Seems to be more fun with a .22LR, I enjoy it more. No more reloading and no more brass whoring (well I curbed)  The upper is accurate with Lapua SK, Wolf Target (which is the same as SK) and the CMP's Aguila GE.
I've improved a bit on my positions with the upper. Great tool. good feedback

I did some horse trading into a new 22LR Bbl from Accuracy speaks,, but is was for the atchesion kit, called Derrick to see id he'd trade for one for the M-261 kit.
He was kind enough to agree.
The rest I put together from parts I had on hand.
For practice, I use the Wally World Fed bulk,, it will shoot about a 1/2 group off sand bags and peep sights at 50 yrds.
It gives me good feedback especially for my off hand.
I think you can get a Bbl from either Derrick or Frank for around the $350 range,, after all,, you wont wear it out soon.
I think I have about $200 in mine.

I bought a DPMS a few years back. Sweetest little black gun going. Sported a SS Wilson barrel in 1x16" twist, great sights and excellent functioning with various ammo.
To my understanding, they had a problem with a few firing out of battery. Caused a problem with their product liability carrier (at least they have one) so they discontinued it. I have had no problem with mine and haven't needed any parts. Knock on wood! Shoots good and as with all 22 rf's, the better grade of ammo you feed them the tighter they will shoot.
One minor down side with the DPMS is that the bolt doesn't stay open after the last shot is fired. I was told that when the NEW model comes out, that feature will be corrected along with the bolt problem that some encountered.
When will the new model be coming out? They told me and others at Perry this year that it was put on the back burner because they had orders for something like 32,000 complete rifles. Ha! That was several months before the "election"!!!!!

Their first unit sold at Camp Perry for $425 or $450 with one mag. When the new one comes out, I seriously doubt that it will be much more. Meaning, in terms of cost alone, it probably be worth the wait.

Recently I am think I seen an advertisement somewhere that another company had a 22 rf dedicated upper on the market. It may have been Model 1 Sales????

Funny you should bring that up... Model1 Sales does have a dedicated upper available, I just bought one today. I'll post info after a range trip tomorrow. I paid $495 for the complete upper + 1 Black Dog mag. It's Ciener-style and apparently it is just like the Spike's Tactical version except for the extra money Spike's has a plated BCG. The barrel is a 1 in 16" twist. I looked at Spike's too but all the ones I saw there were with rails etc and I was looking for a service rifle style so I'd have a similar feel and balance to my SR uppers. So needless to say I got a 20", the only difference is I bought a flattop when my primary SR is an A2.

Anyway, I'll try it at the range tomorrow. I don't have much 22rf experience to compare it to though.

Do any other manufacturers of .22lr uppers have free float tubes other than CLE ?

you can put a free float tube on any...  i have a Kuhel dedicated upper with a RRA tube.  My off hand score has increased dramatically.  Best training tool i have purchased

Yes, but at an extra cost.

The question is, do you buy a $500 upper and put $250 in tubes and sights and "stuff" or do you spend $750 on a professionally built upper with all the extras? (if you could find one at that price)

So many questions in life.

If you plan on just using it for OH,, you don't need a tube.
I find that I do better in all positions when I practice OH only
A FFT runs about 110.00 from WOP

I recently bought a model 1 sales OCMP 20" heavy barrel dedicated upper with NM front and rear sights, and free floated handguards. i had it out to the indoor range twice and I am very happy with the $670.00 investment. i have it on my RRA NM lower. i am new to highpoweer and in fact I haven't shot a highpower match yet, but plan to this year....maybe even go to Perry. The winters here in NW PA are inconsiderate for outside shooting, so its inside with the Model 1 dedicated upper. Black Dog Machine just came out with a short magazine that is the same size as the 223 20-round magazine. I'm shooting the SR target reduced for 50 feet as found on Ray-Vin's web site. I believe I'll have it paid for in ammo saving .223 versus 22lr by spring.

Not counting the wear and tear on your match barrel.

Brownell's has the RRA float tube for $100. Best float tube in my opinion. Comes with E-Z installation instructions, strength etc. Included are the modified hand guards, sling swivel and rivet. Not to mention the modified gas tube as you won't need this on a 22 rf upper but a good item to have around or for resale. I have installed all of the others to include, Fulton Armory, WOA, CLE and Derrick Martins. All will do the job but for the added extras as I described, you can't beat the RRA
DPMS has a new 22 RF dedicated upper al;most ready to come out but the folks that voted for Obama created a years worth of panic buying to contend with, on the AR class rifles.
I would also comment on the conversion units like the Ciener. Too much bullet jump for accuracy and the twist in your standard 223 barrel will not put the RF bullet where you are looking! These units are for plinking or ammo burning.
