I checked out my first CMP match and developed these five questions after I left. If a M16A4 is OK, then an AR with a detachable carry handle and Knight's Armament rail forearm is legal? Can you use a SAM-R profiled barrel or do you have to stay with the H-Bar profile barrels? Do most prefer 1-7" or 1-8" barrels? Lobing some 80grains I am assuming 1-7" Can you use non-stock parts in the internals - like Endline buffers, coated carriers, lightweight carriers, etc. I know the trigger must be in a certain range. I realize 20 rds are preferred but can PMags and HK mags be used the first time out (all I currently have) Thanks. |

I checked out my first CMP match and developed these five questions after I left. If a M16A4 is OK, then an AR with a detachable carry handle and Knight's Armament rail forearm is legal? A flat top AR 15 is allowed as long as the carry handle has the A2 style sight. The handguards must look issue, NO Rails Can you use a SAM-R profiled barrel or do you have to stay with the H-Bar profile barrels? The part of the barrel extending beyond the handguards must be the same dimension as the A2 Do most prefer 1-7" or 1-8" barrels? Lobing some 80grains I am assuming 1-7" Either would be fine. Can you use non-stock parts in the internals - like Endline buffers, coated carriers, lightweight carriers, etc. I know the trigger must be in a certain range. Anything goes inside as long as it is Semi-Automatic and the trigger while cocked can raise a 4-1/2 pound weight from a table etc. I realize 20 rds are preferred but can PMags and HK mags be used the first time out (all I currently have) The magazine must look identical to the USGI 20 or 30 rd mag externally. |

All good answers. The 8" twist will do well for up to 80 gr bullets. The 7" will also work, but will "work" the bullet slightly more than is necessary. For 90 gr, you would have to go to 6.5" twist. What would you expect to achieve with different buffers, coated carriers, or (especially) lightweight carriers? I can see a stiffer buffer with heavier bullets (not really needed); however, more people go with heavier carriers to diminish the recoil pulse of heavier bullets (like the Tubb carrier weight system or at least a full weight M16 carrier). Lastly, a coated carrier is good for what? Answer: 1) it looks good/different, 2) it wipes clean 3 seconds faster. Just my opinions. You can use any of those items in the Match Rifle class. |
| Not really interested in those specific internal modifications. Just the wondering if a lot of the rifles I was examining had mods inside of them too as I was trying to gage the money invested in the rifles and equipment. One guy had two really nice M1A's he was competing with. I wish my AR10A4 was legal. My other questions are really aimed at the fact that a A4-ish rifle with rails is more useful to me for the kind of shooting I like to do, otherwise I would end up with a competition only rifle in safe that only came out once a month which I don't like. |
| I have a Colt Match Target HBAR with Rock River DCM Free Float tube, I used to have a 1:8 Wilson on it but now it wears a 1:7 Wilson for no other reason than availability. I have a surplus M16A1 carrier, and run a WOA tuned RRA 2-Stage NM trigger, WOA pinned NM 1/4 min hooded sight. You don't need anymore than I have done and could get by with a little less barrel, sights, and a standard Rock River 2 stage NM trigger. |
Okay let me take a crack at this. The CMP Competiton Rules book 12th. edition - 2008 states: You may be able to down load these rules from the CMP web site, I am not sure. So rule 6.2.3 (12) states that the standard handguard or tube without an accessory rail may be used. Barrel contours: If its under the handguard where a contour modification is made, that's okay as long as it doesn't exceed 20" in length. It may or not have a flash hider. Twist rate; Barrels of 1x7, 1x 7.7 and 1x8 all stabilize the 80 gr. Sierra or Nosler bullets. Mags must be standard US military issued 20 or 30 round. Keep in mind when buying mags that the 20 round "curved" mags are NOT legal. They must be straight! On non issue carriers etc. these would fall under internal modifications. They would be allowed as long as the rifle isn't made unsafe. Triggers must weigh a minimum of 4 1/2 lbs. Hope this helps OOOPs! While I was typing and looking through the rule book, you got three other replies Dave McGrath |

I stand corrected. Externally, it's gotta look like "the standard 10, 20-round or 30-round box magazine." Now, just what the hell a "standard 10 round magazine" is and what the external dimensions of said ten round magazine is, I don't know. |
I think it is a 20 rounder with a block so that you can only load 10. Might be wrong. |
