| Yes, I read the CMP rules and the SKS is not legal. Then how come my local range CMP guys allow me to shoot matches??? |
A - Because you are not going to win with one. B - They are just happy to see another shooter enjoying the sport. C - They hope you will enjoy it enough to get a proper service rifle and be "leg meat" at the next leg match! May or may not be in that order.

I think you are correct as far as an NRA match. Except that they are having me sign a form for CMP membership. So now do I need a legal CMP rifle. Hate to say it but after seeing thier targets I am competetive...anyway, it is fun. |
| What B said. No one is a "Member" of the CMP. You can join a CMP affiliated club but membership in one isn't a requirement to shoot in a CMP sanctioned match. Some match directors run what is sometimes called a "Directors Match" concurrently with LEG matches to allow match rifle shooters to participate, but the scores don't count for anything. |
If you're shooting real deal CMP matches (Excellence-In-Competition, or Leg matches) with an SKS, you're probably shooting in a concurrent "Director's Match" where match rifles (which is what your SKS qualifies as according to the NRA rules; I'm too lazy to search right now, but I don't think match rifles exist in the CMP rule book) shoot alongside service rifle shooters who are gunning for leg points. The match rifle guys aren't eligible for leg points, and I don't think their scores are reported to the CMP. I'm thinking that you were shooting an NRA match, which are a lot more common than CMP matches. Most clubs aren't too worried about what you bring out on your first few runs, so long as you're out there shooting and you don't hurt anyone. The idea is that you get hooked and come back for more! |
