Got a question:

I have an older Bushmaster DCM upper.  After reading the barrel swap thread, I figured I'm going to have to install a new barrel before too long.  Looking at the thing last night, I realized that the front sight has no pins or set screws fastening it to the current barrel.  Were they pressed on or what?  How do I get it off so I can reuse the float tube?

Wow that is news to me!  I have used Bushmaster CMP NM club guns before and didn't notice that.  Some people tap the hole on the bottom of the FSB that is hidden by the swivel but your swivel should be mounted on the float tube handguard cap instead of FSB???  And then they just loctite the FSB on.  Pics of the area will help us figure this out.  Heat will allow the FSB to be removed if it is loctited on.

I've got one just like that. About six years old. I just checked it and the front sight base is Loctited onto the barrel. To remove, apply heat and use a wooden drift to hammer it off when hot.

Okay, great info, thanks.  I will post some pics if you like.

I assume they did it like this so that the barrel receives less stress?

BTW, this upper is a postban style and yes, the swivel is back on the float tube.  The bottom lugs of the sight tower are just machined flat and are thinner than on my other upper with the milspec pinned tower.

I got the whole upper dealio from someone out west a few years back and it had high miles, shot about two matches with it, had a kid, and hadn't taken it out since.  I'm back in action for this season.

I don't think it was for less stress. Just cheaper and faster.
