Shot my second ever match and it has been over a year since the first.  RRA NM with 69gr SMK's on 24.5gr of Varget.

389-0x possible 500 100 yard reduced.

Standing: 87  -Better than I thought I would do considering I had no coat.

SR: 69  -Knew I was gonna do lousy here.  Couldn't get a good sight picture for some reason.

PR: 88  -Not sure how I felt here.

PS: 150 -Couldn't see my rounds in the black very well and didnt realize I needed to crank my sights to the right a couple inches.  Would have had then all in the 10.

Coat came, Creedmoor and been doing dry runs in the evenings at home.  Will be out next week.

So this is my second real Service Rifle match.  The XO seems to think I'll break the mid 400's pretty quick as he thinks I have some skillz..

Did you have fun?  Scores are just a way of tracking your progress.

Reduced courses are more demanding of the optics, as you found out.

Don't listen to those who will decry the reduced courses.  If you aren't shooting cleans, they have something to teach you.

Welcome to the game!

Fun?  It was great!

I've never been very athletic and stuggled with sports in the traditional sense.  The whole throwing and catching a ball, running, etc, never came easily to me.  But I have always been able to shoot.  Slingshots, bow and arrow, pistol, rifle, shotgun, etc.  Like a duck to water.  So that I am able to do something with more success than what most guys do is great.

I know that in this discipline it is more a competition with yourself, and I am my own toughest opponant.  But my goals are to eventuallu wear the distinguished badge on my uniform.

I have no idea what the baseline is for beginners.  The XO seemed pretty confident in me.  And I do understand the mechanics of the game. So in time I hope to get that badge.  But I doubt there would be any way this would not be fun.  I mean, go to the range and shoot, it's most guys weekend leisure..  And this is going to be a collateral thing for the USN so I actually will be geting paid to do this occasionally..

Sounds like you are doing fine and you have the desire to continue on. Getting your distinguised badge will be a goal that you can achive with the right dedication.
Just from your comments on how you shot the scores you did shows you are already trying to work out things to improve instead of just going threw the motions.
some type of spotting scope will help you see those shots in slow prone. If you are already using one I do understand that it is still hard to see sometimes.

The slow prone gives you great feedback on each shot. you take a shot and call where it should be and then look and see if it went there. After a while you will be able to tell exactly where the impact is and if it is not there adjust to it.

good luck and keep us informed.

Pretty good! I'm doing my first match tomorrow, reduced 100 yard as well. I just practiced today, standing needs some serious work. -66

I seemed to have some problems with my sight picture. Will printed targets with white matter vs the brownish background?

ssf-66
srf-92
prf-80
psf-161

Govt profile Colt Sporter with xm193. My next purchase will be the coat, waiting on the RRA NM I think I'm liking this stuff.

That will mess with your sight pic especially on a bright day,I use plain old copier paper targets  with a 6" black circle when I shoot my milsurp rifles with cast bullets I always shoot worse on a bright day with these

That sounds like it. I try for the flat tire and had a tuff time. The sun was bright, right from the 6.

Coat came, Creedmoor and been doing dry runs in the evenings at home. Will be out next week.

Which one did you get, that's my next purchase.
