Hi folks,
I'm new to the forum, but I wanted to drop in to ask a question. It seems the most knowledgeable people about the NRA Instructor courses seem to reside on this forum according to my Google searches. Anyway, I was reading through the instructions to qualify and the packet says the following "Candidate will shoot any gun of their choice, regardless of action, sights or caliber, at a blank 9 inch diameter paper target at a distance of 15 yards. Shots must be placed in a 6 inch grouping." I own a Smith and Wesson 22A with a point of aim (red dot) that I shoot all the time down at the range. It's nothing special but it's the gun I'm most familiar with as far as target shooting at those kinds of distances are concerned. I'm assuming because it says "regardless of sights" I can use it with the red dot? I just don't want to go in and have people look at me like this is overkill. Any thoughts would be great. Thanks in advance for the help! |

It all depends on the intstructor. It would be best if you used a centerfire gun with iron sights I would think. The trainer would then be more likely to feel that you are competent with a handgun.
One thing you don't want to do which I have seen many times is show up with a .40 S&W shield or .40 Kahr that you never shoot and miss the target at 15 yards. Happens all the time. |

Yeah, ask the training counselor in advance whether he has a problem with it. I know if I was teaching it, I'd want you to demonstrate that you can use iron sights because a large part of teaching someone to shoot well is demonstrating and diagnosing sight alignment issues, and the majority of your students will be using iron sights. I know I spent time helping the other student who was qualifying with me with some grip problems he was having... |

I took the class a year ago. The reason for the qualification is to ensure you know, understand and can apply and execute the fundamentals. In basic terms, how can you teach someone if you yourself cannot execute the fundementals and shoot yourself. I qualed with my carry gun (g19). I would recomend a "combat" firearm of the like.
You can always ask your training counselor as well. |

I would use an iron sighted handgun. Isn't the class mostly instruction on how to teach the subject, but not a lot of shooting? The class is 99% learning how to teach the classroom portion. My range portion was brief indeed. A red dot is likely fine. It's probably a good idea to prove you can shoot irons too. |
