Okay, I want to be able to shoot steel as close as possible with calibers running from .22lr to 9mm to .223 or 7.62x39.
I really just want a static setup that is angled downward so I can get close. If I could swap out the silhouette for different things like 8", 10", or 12" circles, that would be cool. |

I just ordered a set of AR500 square targets from www.bigdogsteel.com
He has 3/8 and 1/2 inch for sell. The 1/2 is not listed on the website, so you have to email him and pay through pay-pal. He has a sale going right now on the square AR500 1/2inch thick set of 12"x12", 8"x8", 6"x6", and 4"x4" for $160 shipped. The 3/8 is just a litle less, so I would go for the 1/2 inch. I believe that these have holes cut into the corners for hanging/ mounting. |

Here is an example of some targets I made in October since I couldn't find anyone who offered 1/2" AR500 plates for under $100
Halfway down the page: http://www.ar15.com/forums/topic.html?b=3&f=118&t=480600&sr=0 If you look at the way I mounted mine, it works great for deflecting everything straight down into the ground within a 2ft radius of base of the target! |
| Im lucky enough to get some AR400 scraps from work once in awhile (not quite as tough as AR500). If I get any it is usally 3/8" thick and 9" circle. Pistol rounds and 22lr only knock the mill scale off and I have shot them as close as I feel safe (I would about 15 yards are more). Rifles just put holes through it out at 100 yards (remeber it is not as tough as AR500). For pistols and 22lr I also like to use 1/4" mild steel ( a lot cheaper and easier to get). The pistols tend to give the material (regular mild steel) a hammered look after awhile, but not a big deal. So for the pistols and 22 you can get by with something other than AR plate if you could find something at the junk yard or know someone who works at a metal fabircation place. |

jerz_subbie Did you drill the holes in the target yourself? If so how hard was it, or did you use a torch or something else to cut the holes? No, I did not drill the holes. I had a whole sheet of targets cut and the mounting holes cut at the same time. I've been getting so many requests from friends of guys who bought them the first time that I recently decided to do another run of them. |
