Does anybody have a reference or any other sort of general guidelines to be used when setting up a chest rig? I'll be using this for training with carbine/pistol. For pistol only, I'd imagine that I will continue to use the belt configuration I've used in the past. I'd welcome any suggestions. (And yes, I know I need to lose my paunch; too much time sitting at a desk.) TR |

The number 1 guideline should be this: Dont put too much crap on your rig. You dont need to carry everything and your neighbor's kitchen sink on your rig. Only place the items on it you are likely to find yourself using in an actual fight. As a general guideline the only thing on my chet rigs is rifle ammo (usually just 4 rifle mags), a pistol mag pouch, and maybe a BOK (I usually keep this on my 1st line). |

NC Patrol Car is right on - only thing I'd add is for you to make sure you can access your handgun with the rig on. If you CCW IWB, you might have to position the rig a little differently than a LEO with a "bat belt". A BIG +1 for having a gunshot wound first-aid kit (BOK, IFAK, VOK) on your person. |
Yeah, I got a "high chest" rig so I can access my pistol, which rides in a belt holster. Blackwater Tactical makes a 4 AR15 mag high chest rig, SKD tactical sells it. It's got the molle slots so you can add pistol mags and a BOK. |

Trust me you'll get your chest rig set-up the way you think you like it and then after your first range session change it up and probably repeat that a few times until you find what works best for you. That's the beauty of MOLLE. So my advice put what you want on it and then after your first range session where you can mess around with it make some changes. Don't show-up for a carbine course without having worn it prior to that. |
Why don't you drive up north in a few weeks for the AK class (http://argivedefense.com/15.html). I actually spent some time last night trying to resetup my chest rig too. I went with a MOLLE vest in hollidaysburg carbine class and it was OK but awkward at times. Trying out the new configuration at the outdoor range tomorrow. |
Don't have an AK and/or clone. All the vests I have are MOLLE; I have more frigging tactical gear than I know what to do with; I think that is part of my problem - paralysis of too many choices. TR |
