Anybody know what the diameter of the gas port hole in a gas block is? I'm assuming all gas blocks would have the same size hole.

I know the overall dimensions of gas block will vary, but even the hole for the gas port? I'm not talking about the hole for the barrel.

I believe the only variation is the diameter of the gas block which corresponds with the diameter of the barrel. I am pretty sure the actual holes are the same size.

The hole in the barrel will vary depending on length. From what I have seen the gas block hole should always be bigger than the hole in the barrel. The only thing that matters is the inside diameter.

I'm in the process of trying to make a adjustable gas block. I want to use a 10-32 socket set screw, but I'm not sure that the diameter (.190) of a 10-32 set screw will completely cover the hole in the gas block. If I knew the diameter of the hole in the gas block, I will know if it will work.

I use .156 in my gas blocks. That seems to be very common.Military forged sight base is in the .150-.155 range. Craig

So a 10-32 set screw be big enough to cover the hole. Thank you sir, greatly appreciated.

I think I smell what you're stepping in there.... I have a "bolt action" gun that I removed the gas tube, and turned the gas block around (low profile) to cover the gas port in the barrel.  No need to put a set screw in the hole in the gas block.

I already built a single shot AR with a side charging handle.

I used a solid rod in the gas block and installed the gas tube roll pin.
What I'm actually trying to make is an adjustable gas block. The set screw will come in from the front of the gas block just above the hole for the barrel and just below the hole for the gas tube. With tightening and loosening the set screw, I will be able to control the gases coming from the barrel.

Well, I finally finished the adjustable gas block. I used a standard YHM low profile gas block (9383). I drilled and tapped a 6-32" hole right below the gas tube which intersects the hole in the gas block. I used 6-32 x 3/4" long set screw to control the amount of gas that goes into the gas tube. I then drilled and tapped a 4-40 hole through the side of the gas block and inserted a brass set screw so I could lock the 6-32 set screw in place, after I adjust it exactly where I need it. Here are a few pics to better explain. I only have a couple of bucks in the set screws, so I guess the whole thing cost me around $25.00 including the gas block.

What's the purpose, if you have a solid "gas tube"/rod?
