Governor Cuomo Announces Broad Series of Innovative Protections; Vice President Biden Credits Governor Cuomo's Storm Plan as A Model for Future Recovery Efforts

Vice President Joe Biden today joined Governor Andrew M. Cuomo for the unveiling of Reimagining New York for a New Reality, a $17 billion strategy that will transform New Yorks infrastructure, transportation networks, energy supply, coastal protection, weather warning system and emergency management to better protect New Yorkers from future extreme weather. The full press conference can be viewed here.

To ensure that New Yorkers are the best prepared in the nation to deal with emergencies and disasters, Governor Cuomo will create a Citizen First Responder Corps.

Training participants will also receive a NYS Disaster Preparedness Starter Kit that contains key items to assist individuals in the immediate aftermath of a disaster, including:

a plastic drop cloth; light stick; two D batteries; first aid kit; face mask; safety goggles; AM/FM pocket radio with batteries; six packs of drinking water; six food bars; regular flashlight; emergency blanket; duct tape; work gloves; and water bottle. (Arm bands included?)

It really pisses me off when they try to treat s like we are helpless whelps.  I don't need you t close the road, just leave me alone.

On the other hand, should arfcom htf flood this first responder corps?  We could be outfitted, trained, but have our own hidden agenda.

Sounds like a "My First Murder Kit" except for lack of a shovel.

How long before MRAPs with a "snowplow" on the front? I might be crazy but this all sounds like the Eisenhower interstate system in that it may positively impact the community but is mainly for the expeditious transportation of military assets everywhere. I know I'm going off the deep end but Andy's antics have made me suspicious of the motive behind everything he does.

Gotta love it!  17 BILLION to hand out a bag with $20.00 worth of crap and act like you'll be able to help in the aftermath of a natural disaster.
The CERT teams had nothing more to do than hand out MRE's, water and used clothing following Sandy!
Let's spend more money!

I have had contact with CERT teams in cross training with the volunteer fire department and when they show up at calls to "help". I love the orange vests and lime gear hard hats.
Yes the have their place in disasters but not common day emergencies. Their place should be registration check in areas for shelters and handing out food and water. Not in mitigation.

More gov't intrusion pure and simple. Citizen first responder Corps=snitch corps. for gov't thugs, Arm bands, really?

Listening to the news conference I was thinking WTF. They HAVE to fix the bridges anyway. The Patroon Island Bridge is falling apart  as are many others. Smoke & mirrors. Weren't the good people of  NYC having trouble getting rebuilt after Sandy?  Did  people in Schoharie County get the FEMA $ they were promised? Sound like more pay offs for Union construction jobs.

You can keep that smallpox blanket. And although I really like Mayday bars you can keep those too.

Between this and all of the ready.gov commercials I think even the .gov believes the fats about to go in the fire.

It's so much easier to keep informed of their plans when you're involved on the inside.
I do believe we're in an alternate dimension of 1930's Germany, 'cept this furor sounds Italian.

edited to add:  The fuck-tard has I-81 shut down from Mexico (North of Syracuse) to the Canadian Border: Now where do you think all that traffic is going? that's right, all the single lane roads through Town, where one little accident, or car drifting off the road brings everything for miles in both directions to a complete halt....smart, real smart.

That's all it is and all it's intended to be... "sounds like".
Sounds like a good idea to some people.
Sounds like the state cares.
Sounds like the state is helping.

The fact that will do nothing is irrelevant.
$17 billion down the drain, all for show (and buying votes).

17 Billion Dollars....try and wrap your head around that.....seventeen Billion Dollars.....
There must be some sort of mistake, after all it's crazy Uncle Joe we're talking about here.
I'm all for Volunteerism, and true "First Responders" (locals, taking time to help out: these are your Fire Fighters, EMT's, etc.)
We've really increased the standards for those we'll accept for membership within our Ambulance Squad....there's a place for everyone, and that place for most is at Home.
Face it; for the greater part, the citizenry people living here have been so dumbed down, that too many can't function under the simplest of inconveniences, let alone a true "emergency" some just can't help it due to debilitations, there are those in the FSA box cars, and plenty too busy watching American Idol to be aware of their surroundings.

I truly believe we in this State and more likely the entire Country are headed for a great awakening in the form of catastrophe, from what exactly I know not, what I do know is how quickly "the system" becomes overloaded and abused, when it does you'd damn well better be prepared to deal with life on your own because at several points your thrive ability and survival will hinge upon your preparations including those made in conjunction with others...."Sounds   nice, having State issued little emergency kits with a few useful trinkets to keep you occupied while you're about to die or be killed.

Calling that an emergency kit, would be like having my wife hand me a pack of Walmart blow up  swimming floaties as a cruise ship was going down. Who did they get to build this? I do truly hope, this kit is issued to everyone with Cuomo's egenda in mind. Id lk to see what they are spending on this fisher price prepper pack.

I am in Nassau CERT and we are not trained or expected to work emergencies like first responders.  We may do refreshments, paperwork and assist in searching for people but we are not supposed to put ourselves in dangerous situations.  Granted if all hell breaks loose and we are looking at TEOTWAWKI then I guess anybody with a hard hat and vest is on deck.
