You have to apply in your county of residence.

And if I have the option to reside in one or the other, I'm wondering which would be the better route to take.

Sxhenectady County, got my permit in 2003. It took five Months.. Toni, the woman down at the County Clerks office is cool, and helps with any questions. They do issue with B.S. conditions, but a letter to the judge, in my case Judge Veraci? (SP) granted concealed carry in three weeks. ( 2010). I think it's different now. Overall not bad, but this was before FUAC. Hope this helps.

I believe a number of counties require that you reside in the county for a period of time before applying unless you are transferring a permit in from another NY county, somebody please correct me if I'm wrong on that. I know that when I applied for my permit lose to 20 years ago in Onondaga County, I needed to have references from within the county who could speak to knowing me for a period of time. Do you have potential references in both? I believe Schenectady might also require you to have a restricted permit for awhile until you take some courses. I'm in Schenectady, but transferred in with full carry. I'm pretty sure most counties are still back logged on applications, expect. 9-12 months. Good luck.

Just looked up the Montgomery Co. application and it does state from within the county.

I'm currently in Schenectady Co, so I will just pursue it through them. Thanks for the info

Schenectady you can get unrestricted after having your permit for a year and taking a class. Not bad.

Yea, Schenectady it will be. Signed up for the course today at Target Sports. Earliest is March 8th, and it can't come soon enough.
