So I'm not excited about 1. Registering  or 2. Fightin' the law.  So I'm looking at the 3rd option as far as the M1A goes.  I have a fake flash supressor (has no slots), but the barrel is threaded.

I'm thinking of filing the threads off.  I can fit the faux suppressor tight enough that it takes a mallet to move it on the splines.  FWIW, the barrel is only going to last me another year or two.

For CMP rules, I'd have to glue the castle nut in place.  I might end up pinning the suppress and nut to the barrel with a screw down through a tapped hole under the front sight into a blind, unthreaded hole into the barrel..

I'd have a semi-auto rifle with no features.

I'm doing the same thing but I'm tack welding the small set screw into the sight housing instead of removing the barrel threads. Since the SAFE had no definition of what's permanent I'm going with the ATF definition of a permanent attachment. Once the device is welded in place the barrel is no longer threaded.
