Lets say I want to go to the range (long guns only), am I legal to go on my own? (17) |

At 17, appears you are perfectly legal to possess a long gun without supervision... "ON A RANGE" according to this:
http://cd.textfiles.com/group42/WEAPONS/LAWS/NY.HTM Possession––-Rifles and Shotguns
There is no state licensing requirement for the possession of a rifle or shotgun, although any person convicted of a felony or other serious offense and any person who ``has been certified not suitable to possess a rifle or shotgun'' (mentally incompetent) is prohibited from possession. A person who has been convicted of a felony or other serious offense may obtain a certificate of good conduct which will then permit him to possess rifles and shotguns. Generally, it is unlawful for anyone under the age of 16 to possess any firearm; however, a rifle or shotgun may be possessed by a person between the ages of 12 and 16 who is engaged in supervised target shooting on a range. A minor at least 14 years of age may hunt with any rifle or shotgun, provided he has a valid hunting license and is accompanied by his parent, guardian or other parentally-designated adult who also holds a valid hunting license. Would have to look for NY Administrative Penal law for traveling with one... ETA: Looking at the penal law under Exemptions(#7), the above it correct at a range or during hunting, HOWEVER, looks like 18 is the delineator as most things. Legal to purchase, legal to possess. Sorry, kid. I can appreciate that someone your age has the presence of mind to ask first. |

Contrary to popular belief until scumbag PatakiTax forced his 5 point anti-gun package in 2000 a 16 year old could get a CC pistol license in NYS. Sixteen is actually the magic age in NYS for many things including being charged as as adult for a crime instead of as a <16 year old JD. At 16 you can also get married with a judges permission, quit school and get emancipated. Until the NY Legislature changed the age of consent a few years ago to 17 it was also 16. Where in the PL or ENCON law does it prohibit a 16 year old from transporting an unloaded long gun to/from a hunting area or a range? |
