Im new the AR scene.

I have a new stag arms model 5 in 6.8

i want to free float the barrel.  but considering its NY compliant ive heard its a bit more difficult.  Im a fairly handy guy so i think i can tackle the job but i really need some advice on which rail to get.  i want it to cover the gas block and im leaning towards the 4 rail style hand guard instead of the style i have now.  ive looked @ troy, MI, samson, etc...  i want something light w/ a fairly easy install.

i also want to ditch this stock and put on a magpul ctr then pin it.  that seems easy enuff i just need to find out if this tube is mil or commercial.

btw, i hate NY.  :)

thanks for any help, tips, pointers, etc.

To switch the stock you will need to replace the tube, spring, and buffer since yours is a rifle system.
For the rail, I would look at a DD 2 piece system so you don't have to mess with the muzzle device.

Neither, it's a rifle length buffer tube. You can't just buy a CTR and slide it on.
You need to buy:
CTR stock
milspec/commercial tube
Carbine spring
Carbine buffer
Castle nut
Receiver end plate.

Do you know what the gas system is on that?

You could always cut the old handguard off and install a 2 piece free float system after, like MI or troy sells.

No I do not.  Im calling my dealer tomorrow.

Do I need a new buffer spring n buffer for the magpul stock?  Why wouldn't my spring and buffer work w a 6 point buffer tube?

I have free floated a few barrels, would be happy to walk you through it...its really pretty easy.

Do you own a Dremel?

The key is getting all the parts you need to put it back together, and making sure they work with each other.  Example if you want a full length rail, then you need to get the low profile gas bloc...etc.

Google everything before you buy.  Anything you plan to do has been done, and every combination of parts already been tried.  So check that everything will be compatible before you buy.

If you are around the Putnam County area, i would be glad to help.

ETA: If you have all the parts are know they will work together, this would take less then a half hour to accomplish.

For the THIRD TIME your rifle as it sits right now has a Rifle Buffer SYSTEM in it.
Rifle buffer, rifle spring, and rifle tube.
