| I was curious if anyone else in NY (I'm in WNY) would be interested in establishing a partnership to take old used preban mags and turn them into "like new" or better than new mags for ALL of us in the ban states? I have been doing pretty well picking up 30 round mags at a decent price but they are still the bottom of the barrel compared to what is available to those in the free states. I would like to find a few people interested in having them professionally powder-coated and new/upgraded internals as well as better floor plate systems. I know that the rebuild kits are pretty expensive through Brownells. I just dont know if the market would be there to get back out of them what it would cost to rehad them. |

Not because I want them to look new, because they would perform on par with new production as well as extend their lifetime.
Powder coat them to create less friction inside and out, replace the followers, replace the springs, install better floor plates. If there was enough interest then I think it would became feasible to do a couple hundred and get them into the hands of fellow NY'ers at a cost that they can afford. Prebans are expensive - relativity speaking; the more mags that I can get onto the market, the more it will drive the price down and make them more accessible to others. I could round up 50 or so magazines, combined with others, I think that it may be worth while.. |

I had quite a few that I acquired during the Federal ban that were golden colored from the finish wearing off. I used the military recommended Perma-Slik G (http://quakercity.com/QC_Lubricants/permaslikg.htm) on them and replaced the original followers with the "Green" type though they are colored Orange instead of Green. |

I take my preban 30's, refinish them with ccr dry moly after giving them a good washing, replace the springs and drop in magpul gen3 yellow followers. I keep all the old springs and followers in a box, and keep the bodies and floor plates intact for dated and undated mags. I won't pull any of the identifiers off the mags under any circumstances.
Too many NY LEO's I've spoken to think that you can't use preban mags in post-ban guns, and even the guys I consider friends don't like being told they are wrong or that they are reading 265 wrong or that they are adding an interpretation into the law that isn't there and that 265.23 actually contradicts. I don't want to have to fight more than one battle at a time if I can help it. |
| Well, I'd still be interested in suggestions that others have used to increase the reliability. I've seen MagPul followers for about $2 ea and springs I think for about $1 so all that is left is a MagPul floor plate I would guess. I haven't seen alot of info on home brew rebuilds and would (if for not one other than my self) be interested in a better quality series of mags available for use. I'm willing to try anything, except spray paint. I seen some nice CNC floor plates both flat bottom and loop style, I don't worry about LEO's too much; never had an issue- aside from being razzed at the range because they have new magpuls and I have Vietnam era equipment. I think the integrity of prebans is real good (but having never owned new mags) and to bring them up to date would be nice. |
| I clean them, paint with ccr dry moly lube, replace the spring, install anti tilt follower and put on ranger plates. They look and function like new. Dry moly lube has no build up like with paint, great color, dries quick and applies like nothing I've ever used. I keep all the old floor plates just in case. The moly lube is not cheap and the cost of parts and time would command a price higher than most would pay, but the end product is damb nice |

I have over 100 pre-ban 30s and never had a problem, but then again I dont have junk rifles. My FS2000 has never had a hiccup. I have never even replaces followers yet. I use the worst silver / brass looking ones first. I have never payed over $20 for a pre-ban yet. You can get them for the cost of cheap new mags by just contacting the guys who post in the WTT Pre-Ban mag thread on the EE. |
| I've got some pre-bans with issues I'd send you. All the coatings, floor plates, springs and followers in the world isn't going to fix what's wrong with them because none of those things are what goes bad with them. For the most part you're talking cosmetics. I didn't know rebuild kits are pretty expensive. If they are perhaps it's because you're buying them as a kit. |

If the feed lips are bad or body is dented, game over. Crush them and replace. |
